This is going to be terrible. In fact, future historians will probably look back at the 2010 election as a catastrophe for America, one that condemned the nation to years of political chaos and economic weakness.
I’ve written this many times before but it bears repeating: voters, especially the ones who are angrily swinging to the Republicans, have no clue what they’re asking for. Washington will seize and shut down. Nothing will get done. The Republicans won’t — ever! — pass anything that the president will sign and take as a victory. They’ll only pass legislation that the president will veto. It will be their ongoing sabotage strategy, but from a position of a House majority. As Krugman writes: this isn’t the GOP of 1995, when there were many Republicans who committed to getting things done, even if it meant compromising. That Republican Party no longer exists.
Voters are blindly flailing and screeching their way into a propeller. And, sadly, dragging the rest of the nation with them.
