Anthony Weiner Has Mighty Pectorals

This post isn’t really about Anthony Weiner, but I thought the headline would grab some attention for an issue that’s being nearly ignored at this point — in America, at least. I’m referring to the nuclear meltdown in Japan.

Japan’s nuclear safety agency has more than doubled its estimate of the amount of radiation released into the atmosphere from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says it believes the earthquake-stricken Fukushima plant emitted nearly 800,000 terabecquerels of radioactive material into the air in the days after it was hit by a massive tsunami.

That is more than double the original estimate and is based on new information suggesting the No.1 and No.2 reactors suffered meltdowns much earlier than thought.

The revision reveals the failure to contain the disaster resulted in much more radioactive contamination of the soil, sea and air than the plant’s operators had acknowledged.

The disaster is rated a maximum seven on the international nuclear accident scale, the same level as the Chernobyl meltdown 25 years ago.

“Wiener’s pectorals are rated a maximum seven on the international nuclear accident scale, the same level as the Chernobyl meltdown 25 years ago.”

So what’s the problem with the headline again?

So I’ve been thinking about something concerning the Wiener thing: in the hours/days after the release of the underwear pic, it didn’t rate headline status on HuffPo. They didn’t seem to be going out of their way to defend him either. Then when it was revealed that he had been sending cock-shots out into the ether, BAMMO, it’s headline news. Anyone else think this is a result of Andrew Brietbart’s previous relationship with HuffPo?

Back to Japan- We are constantly in information overload thanks to the many ways we can get instant updates to literally everything. Most stories, even extremely important stories, get forgotten after fourteen days or so, quickly supplanted by the next tragedy/scandal/cataclysm. It’s a sad fact.

Japan? That’s not all fixed? Like the Gulf Coast? Like Haiti?

    :-) @ the title

As to the meltdown, it’s difficult to get too excited when we don’t know how it will affect US.

As a hypothetical example, I love white Albacore tuna, most of which is fished in Japan’s seas. Should I discontinue eating the tuna?

I know this seems petty, but it isn’t a disaster to most people until they hear, preferably see, the real affects, and better yet, how it affects their lives specifically.

Finishing up here, i recognize that this is a serious situation, however, unless you give us further info so we can go in to full stressed mode, we are likely not to pay much attention. It’s just human nature.

I think the info is pretty readily accessable. I think the graphics were available at time of the tsunami.

But there have been no updates on this that I am aware of. As the crisis deepens, should not there be more of this kind of info presented?

My point is that the information needs updating. If you want to tell us about the deepening crisis, then tell us about the damn affect of that deepening. Otherwise, most people will just ignore it. That’s, as I said, human nature.

nicole – I’d hold off eating albacore for a bit, although at this point I think all food is tainted in one way or another (thanks, Monsanto, mercury, etc. ad nauseum). I sure hope those hormesis advocates are right. (but I know they’re not, sigh)

        Thanks, BG. :)

Yeah, I stopped eating it shortly after the crisis began, but I really wish we could get updates on what and who is affected.

        Edited to clarify.

There have been people keeping tabs on this, unfortunately, a lot of them are like this lady, so they haven’t gotten the attention this deserves.
