Worst President Ever For Gay People

This is big news:

President Obama is throwing his support behind the Respect For Marriage Act – the bill to repeal the 1996 Defense Of Marriage Act, which banned the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage even for couples married under state law.

No, he hasn’t fully and completely enacted equality for all gay people in his first term. But to insist he’s dragging his feet or is, according to the most hyperbolic activists on the left, “the worst president ever for gay people” is just outstandingly stupid.

I’d have to agree only to a certain extent. He could have done a lot more. Personally, as a gay man, I can see we have bigger fish to fry. Right now, if government gave me the right to marry whomever I wanted, how does that create the jobs we need to get our economy back on track? Don’t get me wrong, this is extremely important, however, right now we need to get people back to work earning a fair wage for a fair day of labor. If I can marry my partner, then we’d be poor together and in the same economic mess.
    Just an opinion. Nothing more.

For the record, not ALL GLBT folks feel that way. I for one am very grateful for the accomplishments of President Obama. The contrast between him and Bush is nothing less than astounding. And not just on gay-specific issues like DADT and DOMA, but also on, say, health care reform.

The gay blog I post in on occasion will hear no parts of that, though.

The idea that Pres Obama doesn’t care about LGBT issues is uninformed and naive at best, and purposeful propaganda at worst.

He has planned out every single step to get to where he wants to go (completely equal rights for LGBT), and he will get there by the end of his second term. Had it been up to those who shriek the loudest, it would not end nearly as well as it will.

He knows exactly what he’s doing.

“He knows exactly what he’s doing”.

Yeah, and that’s the problem. At least W had the excuse of being stupid.

So, when you have your “completely equal rights for LGBT” (will that come with or without the unicorn that shits rainbows?), it won’t do you much good since neither you nor your partner will have a job — or be able to find one — that doesn’t require memorizing “Would you like fries with that?”

That is, IF either of you has a job after President Hopey-Changey finishes destroying the economy and the social safety net.

Wow, really you’re quoting Sarah Palin to sound clever? Not impressed!

First of all, I’m not gay, however, being a woman is enough to qualify me as one of the discriminated against, so don’t get on your damn high horse.

Second, tell me, is there another president whom you feel would have done better? Come on now, we all want to know the answer to that.

      • JMAshby

        President Hopey-Changey?

        Ass.

      • jjasonham

Luckily, polls show that you are in that small percentage of people who blame Obama for everything.

There are times when I completely understand why right-wingers hate The Left™.

    • MrDHalen

I was very disappointed to discover so many people on the left have adopted this “All or Nothing” attitude that has been the dominate character trait of the right. The only time our government moves fast on anything is after a massive tragedy has occurred or we want to drop bombs on people.

I am very happy to see that homophobic people are being shouted down more and more by society now when they spout their ignorant comments.

I’m looking at you, Dan Choi.

How can PBO be “the worst President ever” for gay people when no Democratic POTUS did as much for gays/lesbians before PBO?

Not even the “progressive hero” FDR did as much for gays/lesbians as President Obama is, but let’s not equate facts into the equation shall we?

    • http://profiles.google.com/wavydavy2000 David Hendrickson

To repeat in summary form my reply to nicole473, “It’s the economy, stupid.”

You’re being played just like the right wing played the “values voters”.

      • http://www.politicalruminations.com/ nicole

Uh huh. As I said to you below, which president is it exactly that you feel would have done a better job for the LGBT community?

(of course we know that NONE of them did ANYTHING)

      • incredulous72

It would really help if YOU would stick to one topic instead of jumping through the talking-points hoops.

So you’re pissed that he hasn’t done enough in terms of equal rights for the LGBT community and you’re pissed about the economy . . . I think.

However, as stated above, he has done more for the LGBT community than any, I repeat, ANY President, Democrat or republican, in the country’s history.

And as far as your being pissed about the economy, President Obama is not the one that ran this country into the ground for 8 years, so to expect him to turn it around in 2 1/2, with staunch opposition from the republicans and some in his own party, is well . . .

        Batshit Crazy.

The federal government is constitutionally compelled to recognize and protect civil rights. Any further delay of recognition of these rights and an immediate injunction on ruinous discrimination is a victory for theocracy.

Equality has a right to be pissed.
