The Bush Tax Cuts Continue to Haunt Us

Regarding the Bush tax cuts:

Standard & Poors indicates that they could improve their rating for the U.S. if “the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts for high earners lapse from 2013 onwards, as the Administration is advocating.”

Well, shit. There’s no way the Republicans will allow that to happen.

I simply cannot comprehend why people continue to support the party that supports these asinine anti-taxation, surplus-is-bad policies. And what is even more infuriating is that they do not realize (and by they, I’m thinking particularly of working and middle class citizens) that President Obama has severely cut their taxes. As a graduate student and aspiring educator, I place the blame for this solely upon the degradation of the American public education system. It’s upsetting on so many levels. Sorry for the rant.

As a practicing educator of seventeen years, holder of two masters degrees, and a liberal, I find your “rant” as simplistic as it is annoying. In fact, it sounds like something a conservative would say. Spend ten minutes in an actual classroom and seventeen years indulging the moronic rants of conservatives who have nothing but disdain for public education–your opinion might be tempered a bit. (That aside, I applaud your career choice. Be prepared to defend it against people who will tell you that you have the best “part-time job in America.”)

I suppose I’m confused by the temper of your response. Not exactly sure how my statement/opinion could have been construed as ‘conservative.’ And while I certainly do not have your 17 years of educational experience, I have spent the past 2+ years educating college freshmen at a public university, so I would appreciate a slightly less personal tone in your ‘attack’ of me. I hope that I have merely missed the sarcastic nature of your response; if that is not the case, however, consider me confused as to the nature/basis of your reply. It is a fact that the American public education system is woefully underfunded, and there has been a marked de-emphasis on the teaching of critical thinking, creative and problem-solving.

Don’t apologize for speaking truth. Among many lamentable and irreversible truths that confront anyone possessing sufficient vision to be pissed off, the utter failure of the what passes for Public Education in America demands time.

The first thing the Republicans will scream is “liberal bias”.

The pushback on the tax cuts for millionaires = jobs for the rest of us notion should be easy. After a decade of all this the number of jobs created should be easy to estimate.

But then again, the most people pushing these cuts also don’t realize they don’t benefit from them or that tax cuts add to the deficit.

  • JMAshby

No, they wont allow it to happen. That’s exactly why all brackets will expire.

They would never let them expire on only the rich without expiring on everyone else too. Shared sacrifice remember?

    They are just that bitter.

    • Zen Diesel

If that is what it is going to take for those tax breaks to expire then I am all for it.

  • Dan_in_DE

I really hope that Ashby is right, and these chicken-shit Dems are willing to let the tax cuts expire on everyone.

The last paragraph of S&P’s press release really makes it 100% clear, doesn’t it? Tax cuts for the rich are bankrupting this country!

On second reading, JM Kirker, I owe you an apology. I read degradation to mean deterioration. It seems that we are likely on the same page. You did not deserve such a knee-jerk response. I am truly sorry, and I still applaud you for your career choice.

    • JMKirker

jdoggz – now it is my turn to reciprocate. Five minutes ago, I responded to your critique of my previous comment before I saw this post. Yes, it does look like we are on the same page. No worries. Take care. Cheers.
