At least according to Steve King.
The conservative freak-out over the Department of Health and Human Services requiring insurers to provide women’s healthcare, such as birth control and breast exams, without co-pays or deductibles continues.
Echoing his Fox News counterparts, Representative Steve King (R-Batshit) is utterly convinced that offering free birth control means the end is nigh, and he took to the floor of the House yesterday to play the role of doomsayer.
KING: They’ve called it preventative medicine. Preventative medicine. Well if you applied that preventative medicine universally what you end up with is you’ve prevented a generation. Preventing babies from being born is not medicine. That’s not— that’s not constructive to our culture and our civilization. If we let our birth rate get down below replacement rate we’re a dying civilization.
Gee, I hope no one tells him that in France, high school students can obtain free condoms from the school nurse. He just might have an aneurysm.
Likewise, free birth control has been available in parts of Europe for decades. And as far as I can tell, they aren’t a dying civilization.
Furthermore, freely available birth control greatly reduces the number of abortions. Don’t conservatives hate abortion?
Perhaps they are just afraid that a declining number of abortions will remove yet another talking-point from their pool of nonsense.
