Historian Gingrich Doesn't Understand Free Speech

Gingrich said he refuses to participate in debates that don’t allow boisterous audience participation. And he’s using Sarah Palin’s misinterpretation of the First Amendment as an excuse.

“We’re going to serve notice on future debates,” he told Fox. “We’re just not going to allow that to happen. That’s wrong. The media doesn’t control free speech. People ought to be allowed to applaud if they want to.”

It’s not unconstitutional for the media to set debate rules. It’s unconstitutional for Congress to pass a law restricting free speech. Likewise, Sarah Palin, it’s not unconstitutional for radio listeners to demand that Dr. Laura lose her awful show.

Again, Gingrich is a whiny diaper baby.

The National Journal, which co-hosted the NBC debate, compared Gingrich to “a stand-up comedian whose routine suffers without echoes of laughter egging him on.”

    That about sums it up.

Without a cheering section, debate moderators might be able to ignore Gingrich’s barbs as the distractions they really are. And if Newt can’t treat a debate like a political rally, he’s not going to play any more. Got it.

Shameless. Shameful. Childish. Why would anyone expect anything else from Newt Gingrich?
