I wanted to comment a little on an interesting discussion we were having about the impact of a Ron Paul third party candidacy, particularly if he could put Texas in the blue column.

I emailed David Nir, the elections guy at Daily Kos, and suggested that they have PPP poll Texas with a hypothetical three-way race. He thought the idea was interesting and he’d send it to the higher-ups.

He also pointed me to a PPP national poll (PDF) asking about a hypothetical Obama-Romney-Paul three way race. The result was Obama 42 Romney 37 Paul 17.

So it seems that Paul would indeed take some votes from Obama, but he’d take more from Romney, leading to a 5 point margin of victory.

This should go without saying. Paul is a Republican. “Liberals” supporting Paul are essentially 2000 Nader voters. They were about 2-3% of the electorate in that year. The bigger bite comes against Romney.

If the Democrats get a chance at a recall vote of Governor Walker, they better succeed voting him out. If Walker successfully weathers a recall vote, I have a feeling it re-vitalize the Tea Party and all its ideas to the national media.
