President Obama Is Not Growing Government

Job growth chart via Ezra Klein:

Note the blue bars. Government jobs are being eliminated while private sector jobs are slowly recovering. It goes without saying, I’m not a fan of the loss of these government jobs. These are real people with real mortgages — not the bureaucratic automatons the Republicans (and some Democrats) claim they are.

That aside, the Republicans are lying about the president growing the size of government.

Of course they’re lying about the president growing the size of government. Their fans accept it as self-evident truth through a simple logical fallacy: Democrats grow government, Obama is a Democrat, therefore Obama grows government.

You wouldn’t believe the dudgeon I get in return when I tell GOP fans that there is less regulation of industry now than there was in 1975. They absolutely froth at the mouth when I say that; it’s something they’re absolutely incapable of believing. Forget the fact that the Obama administration has, in fact, issued fewer new regulations than the Bush administration did over the same time period; the reality is that you can’t name a single industry that is more heavily-regulated now than it was in 1975. But again, the same logical fallacy: Democrats over-regulate, Obama is a Democrat, therefore Obama over-regulates.

Democrats raise taxes, Obama is a Democrat, therefore Obama raised taxes.

Democrats over-spend, Obama is a Democrat, therefore Obama over-spends.

Democrats are weak on national defense, Obama is a Democrat, therefore Obama is weak on national defense.

Democrats want to take your guns, Obama is a Democrat, therefore Obama wants to take your guns.

Facts. Don’t. Matter. And fiction will put Mitt Romney in the White House.

Facts. Don’t. Matter. And fiction will put Mitt Romney in make the race for the White House far tighter than it should be.

I’m not as pessimistic as you. Yet.

The overwhelming majority of public-sector job losses are at the state level. Republican state legislatures have laid off tens of thousands.
