Koman Walks Back Planned Parenthood Decision

This is moving in a very positive direction, and if they end up doing a complete reversal, it will be a huge victory for women, Planned Parenthood and activism.

We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives.

The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen. We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not.

Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation. We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair.

Our only goal for our granting process is to support women and families in the fight against breast cancer. Amending our criteria will ensure that politics has no place in our grant process. We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.

    Err……Bob, check your title.

I see this as a half-hearted BS apology that will piss off both sides of the abortion issue.

Its kinda like Congressman Bart Stupak’s stupid effort to “prohibit” federal funds from paying for abortions as part of the Health Care reforms and then walking back his non issue.

    What happend to that guy?

I’m pretty sure that once you’ve stepped over the edge of the cliff it’s too late to walk back.

  • agrazingmoose

It is too late. Komen has exposed fatal flaws, once only known to a few, to everyone.

  • Madam1

Too late Komen. Their VP, who ran for governor as an anti-choice candidate that wanted to cut off funds to PP, has been outed. This was an obvious political move that she thought would go unnoticed. Women’s health is under fire and why this group that has done so much good for their movement would hop into the clown car is a mystery.

I believe the expression we’re looking for is “screwed the pooch.”

The Rabbit Hole deepens, just in case you thought Komen decision yesterday did not pass the smell test.

Sorry. You can’t stuff the anti-abortion zealot back in the bottle. Komen has obviously been flying under the radar for a long time. Now that they are on everyone’s collective screen, the picture is not very nice.

  • eljefejeff

What am I missing? This is a full walk back. They’re saying they’ll still fund grants to Planned Parenthood. Isn’t that what we wanted? They saw the error of their ways and changed their minds. That’s great.

    • gescove

Well, Karen Handel, the anti-abortion zealot has not been fired. She was hired after an executive search aided by, I am just learning, Ari Fleischer. She was selected, it seems, for her perceived ability to “handle the issue” of Planned Parenthood. (That went well! Thanks Bush administration hack!) So, yes, existing grants won’t now be terminated and PP can apply for new grants. Any bets on how many grants get funded once this shit storm has passed? The pink is now revealed for the shade of red it is. They deserve not one more dime from anyone truly interested in women’s health.

And Handel is raking in over a half mil in salary.

Adding to what info gescove already imparted……

Komen had a bad rep to begin with. They spend far too much money on their executive salaries and brand promotions, and far too little, much lower than the average, on actual women’s health.

Susan Komen would be ashamed of what the foundation has become.

As to why we shouldn’t just let it go now…well, there are many other orgs who do far more for women’s health than Komen.

Oh, and one of my pet peeves is that even though heart disease and lung cancer are the no. 1 killers of women, Komen rakes in much more in terms of $$$.
