The War on Women is Backfiring

More proof that the GOP’s War on Women is backfiring and that only in the minds of Fox News and the beltway press is President Obama “blundering.”

The respected Dem firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner has just published an important polling memo that gets right to the heart of why the birth control battle could matter so much in this year’s elections.

Greenberg’s poll finds that one of the most important factors powering Obama’s gains against likely GOP nominee Mitt Romney has been the President’s improving numbers among unmarried women, a key pillar of the present and future Democratic coalition.

Among this group, Obama now leads Romney by 65-30 — and there’s been a net 18-point swing towards the President among them:

The conservative media establishment has crawled so far up their own asses, they are denying any and all data that contradicts the narratives they chose to believe in. Whether it’s improving economic data, or data showing that most people agree with the president on, well, everything they will either ignore it or claim conspiracy.

That’s good news for the Democrat’s election chances, but bad news for the country. Because Fox News is creating an environment where it’s impossible for a GOP candidate to win while simultaneously convincing their viewers it’s impossible for a GOP candidate to not win. They’re giving their loyal viewers the impression that any scenario wherein President Obama is re-elected is automatically perceived as illegitimate.

This is not only irresponsible, it’s dangerous.

    Very well said. The problem with living in a bubble is that you don’t know you’re living in a bubble; you think the world inside the bubble is the whole world. When the predictions and pronouncements inside the bubble keep turning out to be wrong (when’s the last time a Republican/right-wing media prediction about a policy outcome actually turned out to be right?), when the real world that you see, hear and perceive with your senses keeps failing to match the world being described to you on the TV, the radio and the Internet, it tends to piss you off. When that happens, you can basically do one of three things:

    1. Go right on believing what you’re told even though you know it’s bullshit, because it gives you comfort;

    2. Re-think things, pay more attention to what’s going on outside, and eventually emerge from, the bubble;

    3. Lash out in anger, fear, hatred and (potentially) violence to force the real world to match what’s in the bubble.

    Granted, Fox et al. did not start inciting Civil War II just now. They’ve been doing it for close to 20 years. But CWII is coming. And it would have been so easy to avoid.

    Fox News: Making Americans dumb enough to vote republican since 1996.

    I’ve said it before: If you thought the post-2008 election tea-tantrums were nasty, just wait until they realize they’ll have another four years under the evil Kenyan secular atheist socialist fascist Muslim fundamentalist ™.

    Funny what happens when a political party targets a major voter demographic for marginalization in the name of “Saving America!” But the GOP has spent almost 20 years making a small loud minority sound like mainstream America. It works great from making a small number of people rich (the goal all along), but as we are seeing it is not sustainable.
    The GOP is so backed into a corner right now they can’t re-orient themselves to a more inclusive platform. So they keep doubling down on the “voter ID laws,” defense of marriage,” “pro-life,” etc. and pray progressives continue to be too cool to regularly vote. Unfortunately, picking on such key voter demographics in order to keep you base happy will only backfire.

    …and those percentages are only going to continue to increase by the day! Never, ever underestimate the power of women in large numbers (especially ones who are ticked off). They have decided many elections.
