Worst Persons in the World

The student newspaper at the University of Texas-Austin, The Daily Texan, for publishing this cartoon in the paper yesterday.

Following the backlash for publishing this garbage, the editorial staff of The Daily Texan issued this cop-out non-apology.

The views expressed in the cartoon are not those of the editorial board. They are those of the artist. It is the policy of the editorial board to publish the views of our columnists and cartoonists, even if we disagree with them.

Translation: “We want the attention and the fruits born from publishing this, but none of the consequences or responsibility.”

As someone who views dozens of political cartoons on a daily basis, including conservative cartoons, I can tell you that conservative cartoonists have been particularly insensitive to the situation, and some have scribbled nonsense that I consider offensive, but this is by far the worst example I have seen.

The moron who drew this monstrosity even managed to spell Trayvon’s name incorrectly while referring to him as a “colored boy.” And I don’t think I need to point out how ridiculous the notion is that the media is somehow oppressing the white man in the midst of all this.

God, it’s only Wednesday, and already this week is terminally depressing. Hell, the country is full up with racists, ever so slowly crawling out of the woodwork, and we have 5 justices who care only for partisan political posturing.

Geezz……..a move to Australia, or somewhere not here, is looking better and better.

Doesn’t it seem like since the election of President Obama that the racists feel empowered…or maybe it’s cornered…who the hell knows. But they clearly aren’t shy about expressing themselves. Death rattle for racism, I hope.

      • http://www.politicalruminations.com/ nicole

Yup. It’s because they have to look at the Pres all the time, and it’s driving them bonkers. :)

I have invoked a sci fi reference before: For those who know Blade Runner, I imigine racists in the throws of death kicking and screaming like the robot Pris as she is killed in the movie.

Yep; that’s their talking point: The media is sculpting the story in a way to portrays Zimmerman as the aggressor and Trayvon as the victim, when in reality….look at this kid’s twitter feed….or something.

While I do understand that media framing is problematic, I’m not so sure its working at cross-purposes with the truth here.

  • BuffaloBuckeye

So, is this indicative of higher education in Texas?

    • http://www.facebook.com/rycarson Ryan Carson

Hope not. I went to UT. Believe me, it doesn’t make me proud for my school or its newspaper. What’s even worse is the just the lazy cartoonization of a right-wing talking point. C’mon man, you can do better than that!

      Freaking awesomely amazing, isn’t it?!

        making David Duke blush

There is nothing more put upon in this country than the white man. Especially a southern white man. And texan whites are an extra-special case. That shithole could only be worse if they had a para-military force as part of their “educational institution” .

Also, too: I’m still waiting for someone to explain why Martin didn’t have a right to protect himself when some asshat started suspiciously following him?

Double-special also, too: I find it humorous that none of the corporate media “journalists” are self-aware enough to realize they ignored this for three weeks.

The Daily Texan Editorial Board recognizes the sensitive nature of the cartoon’s subject matter.

Uh-huh. Fine. I’ll even give the Board the benefit of all possible doubt and assume that Stephanie Eisner’s cartoon had to be run for some reason (it didn’t, even if Ms. Eisner has an actual legally-binding contract with the paper). So why not run a disclaimer along with the cartoon in the first place? No need to be nasty about it, just: “The opinion expressed in this cartoon is that of the artist and not that of the editorial board.”

But the Board didn’t do that. The Board decided to run the cartoon without comment. I can’t prove it, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the cartoon ran because the Board didn’t see anything wrong with it.

Despite the use of the word “colored.”

In 2012, the word “colored” doesn’t seem just a wee insensitive to anyone on the Editorial Board of The Daily Texan? No one at an editorial meeting was troubled by the use of the word?

And beyond the sickening thought of a bunch of college students not seeing any problem with the cartoon, I was under the impression that official student publications, even on college campuses, had faculty advisors. Did no one old enough to legally buy a beer raise an objection?

I’m not going to call for the paper’s faculty advisor to be fired. I’m not going to call for the paper’s Editorial Board to be removed. I’m not even going to call for Stephanie Eisner to be prevented from possessing a pencil with intent to commit cartooning.

I am however hoping that news outlets worldwide take note of all these people’s names and refuse to hire them. (I have no doubt they’ll be hauling in the wingnut welfare checks right after graduation, so it’s not like any of them is going to starve.)

It’s got the awfulness of ten Mallard Fillmore strips. Impressive!

    • muselet

It’s even drawn slightly worse. Impressive, indeed.

Looks like some of the students said hell naw to their non-apology and demanded more:

The cartoonist tried to pull that Faux-Rush apology of not apologizing. Then you read what she initially said on further down. SMH. I hope everybody in her classes giving her the side eye.

    • Zen Diesel

Good for them, the level of insensitivity today is unreal.

  • Victor_the_Crab

Chuck Asay would be proud of that POS cartoon.

    • stabone

the cartoon is making fun of the media, and i agree 100%. the media takes the lowest hanging fruit (in this case racism) and runs it into the ground. while other issues (like crime, fear, gun control, our violent society, our ways of dealing with conflict) are ignored. i believe that to be the point. and i find it spot on.

is it tasteful? given that it appears not, then we do still have plenty of racism around.

      • Brutlyhonest

Low hanging fruit? They ignored it for three weeks until shamed into covering it by people using social media.

Also, it is not making fun of the media, it is accusing the media of distorting the story (yellow journalism); because, you know the media is librul and all.
