In other news, the White House issued a veto threat today on a Republican-sponsored bill which would give the owners of businesses with fewer than 500 employees a 20 percent tax cut.

    Hmm.

    According to Wolfram|Alpha, there are 5.165 million registered businesses in the United States and total non-farm employment of 132 million. Dividing one by the other comes to 25.6 employees per business.

    The Rs propose to give a 20% tax deduction to companies with fewer than 500 employees, saying it is a tax cut for small businesses. A company with 499 employees is a small business?

    (I know, I know, the definition of a small business has to do with the number of owners, not employees or budget or turnover or profit. However, that’s not the way real people use the term.)

    If I didn’t know better, I’d think the Rs were being less than honest about this proposal, but that couldn’t possibly be the case, could it?
