What Could Go Wrong?

This is one of those instances where I end up shaking my head and saying to myself “only in America.”

According to a report from the Miami New Times, corroborated by the leader of the group, a Neo-Nazi white nationalist group is now patrolling the streets of Sanford, Florida in the event that a race riot breaks out.

Neo-Nazis are currently conducting heavily armed patrols in and around Sanford, Florida and are “prepared” for violence in the case of a race riot. The patrols are to protect “white citizens in the area who are concerned for their safety” in the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting last month, says Commander Jeff Schoep of the National Socialist Movement. “We are not advocating any type of violence or attacks on anybody, but we are prepared for it,” he says. “We are not the type of white people who are going to be walked all over.” [...]

Schoep, whose neo-Nazi group is based in Detroit, tells Riptide the patrols are a response to white residents’ fears of a race riot.

The patrols are comprised of between 10 and 20 locals and “volunteers” from across the state, including some from Miami, he added. He couldn’t go into specifics on what kind of firepower, exactly, the patrols had with them.

Only in America does a white man shoot a black man, and then somehow it’s white people who end up concerned about their safety.

I can only imagine the explosion of outrage if a group of armed black panthers began patrolling Sanford, but as it stands you probably won’t hear anything about this from conservative outlets. The white nationalists are just concerned citizens, after all.

so hilarious – unarmed black kid is hunted and murdered by a bigot, and we white folks are pretending to be the injured party.

    i really love us sometimes.

What the fuck kind of reporting is that?! “He couldn’t go into specifics”? Seriously?

There’s your liberal media for ya. You know, just carefully constructing narratives to make a bunch of fucking nazis taking up arms and patrolling the streets appear to be reasonable actors.

Actually, the full report is fairly critical.

      Really man? Really?

Armed Neo-Nazis patrol the streets of Sanford, and nary a word but places like this, and thats still not good enough?

If you find the nutter nazis with guns to be the “reasonable actors” then the sky in your world must be some psychedelic mangerie of what the fuck

Seriously? I’m pissed that this author is portraying neo-nazi scum in too reasonable a light – don’t twist my words around!

What I’m saying is that Ashby brings the right amount of ridicule in his post — though I’d like to see even more — but the twit from Miami New Times just dutifully transcribes their propaganda. Oh yeah, and he adds one snarky line at the end of the article. My point is that you can’t just print nazi bullshit without appropriately pointing how absurd and dangerous it is. Put on your racist redneck hat for a minute and read this through the eyes of a typical rural S. Floridian. See what I mean? It leaves too much room for readers to find them reasonable.

Can you imagine what the reaction would be, locally, from the GOP/Tea Party and in the press, if armed groups of black guys started openly patrolling the streets of their neighborhoods and advocating violence against tresspassers?

Oh yeah…that already did happen and we called them “gangs” and put them in prison.

All the more reason for black Americans to legally arm themselves, IMHO.

Jeff Schoep sounds like he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. Tool, yes; sharp, no.

Asked if the patrols wouldn’t just make things worse — spark a race riot, for instance — Schoep insisted they were simply a “show of solidarity with the white community down there” and “wouldn’t intimidate anybody.”

Because there’s absolutely nothing intimidating about a bunch of armed yahoos wandering around.

“This way, if something were to touch off a race riot, we’d already be in the area.”

Something like, say, a bunch of armed yahoos wandering around?

Oh, and the comments at the link are special.

Love* the one pasty white dude up in there, slinging racist bullshit left and right… whose image has him throwing gang sign. Oy.

I live in Florida…so don’t saw the fucker off yet! Still don’t understand the gun fixation of this state. I’m actually from a more moderate part of the state. It went almost 50/50 in the ’08 election. Also I’ve yet to see any citizens packing heat. Crossing my fingers that continues.

Yeah, concerned citizens with guns never works out well, especially for people of color.

And there was another shooting of black folk in Tulsa, OK just now, about 4 are dead by a white man driving in a truck.

If armed black militia start popping up, Sean Hannity would have a shit fit

Not for nothing did my father call it “The F State.”
