He’s Not An American!

Matt Drudge and the trolls of Breitbart.com apparently aren’t the only ones going full-birther today.

Colorado Representative Mike Coffman was caught on camera expressing his true feelings to his constituents this week.

Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO) is apologizing after being caught on tape delivering a birther rant about how President Obama is “not an American.” “I don’t know whether Barack Obama was born in the United States of America. I don’t know that,” Coffman said at a fundraiser last week. “But I do know this, that in his heart, he’s not an American. He’s just not an American,” he said, local NBC affiliate 9NEWS reports.

An audio recording of the event was posted online by a supporter, who said, “I’m glad the congressman said it. Not enough have. More should.”

Whoops?

He’s sorry that he was caught.

President Obama is more American than any of these asswipes jumping on the Birther train.

But now, Coffman, who has tried to paint himself as a moderate, is backtracking. “I misspoke and I apologize,” he said in a statement. “I have confidence in President Obama’s citizenship and legitimacy as President of the United States. … I don’t believe the president shares my belief in American Exceptionalism,” he explained.

    As Steve Benen rightly said:

That doesn’t work. Sure, everyone misspeaks from time to time, especially in public affairs. Someone might accidentally say Iraq, when they meant Iran. Someone meant to say 47, but they said 57. They’re just verbal slipups, and they’re hardly worth getting excited about.

But it’s not an example of “misspeaking” when someone says, “I don’t know whether Barack Obama was born in the United States of America. I don’t know that. But I do know this, that in his heart, he’s not an American. He’s just not an American.” It’s not like this just slipped out accidentally.

Let’s call this what it really is, shall we? Mike Coffman slandered President Obama, got caught in the slander, issued an insincere non-apology apology to try to make it all go away, then repeated the slander.

    What a wanker.

WTF is “American Exceptionalism” anyway? Do they really believe that America is protected by some magical aura that would provide us from going the way of the Romans or the British Empire?

I really don’t get this birther strategy. Only the nutjob FAR right believes this nonsense. It is NOT going to help them with independents. Hopefully it turns them off, BUT…this is “exceptional” Amuricca in 2012, so….
