The Truth About the President and The Deficit, Part 2

My Monday column for The Daily Banter. It’s another important debunking of Republican lies regarding the deficit. Bookmark and circulate!

Last week I wrote a column here about the president’s record on the deficit. The responses I received from anti-Obama Republicans vividly illustrated the far-right’s inability to grasp reality and, in their defense, the degree to which they’ve been deceived by their leadership — be it Mitt Romney or Rush Limbaugh or anyone in-between.

At the risk of repeating myself, I’d like to again emphasize a key point in what I wrote here. And since this was kind of a buried lead in the piece, it’s worth breaking it out as its own thing.

FACT: President Barack Obama has cut the deficit by $312 billion from Bush’s final deficit through the deficit projections for 2012. Likewise, when Mitt Romney and the Republicans tell their people that the president has doubled the deficit, they’re lying… Continued here.

    O/T: It’s been said by many that the only use Republicans have for numbers is when they can bend those numbers to match the reality they want to present. Arguing points of logic or fact with Republicans is (generally) a pointless endeavor. Unfortunately the loudest right-wing mouthpieces have made their watchers/listeners believe that supporting a position with facts is cowardly. In their minds, it is far better to rely on the “gut.”

    It’s shameful that ignorance has become so popular.

    In the spirit of transparency, I think it would be better to say that Romney’s budget would add an average of $300 billion to the deficit, each year, for the following 10 years, at the end of your quoted post. This may have greater impact as it illustrates that Romney’s plan will increase the deficit, each year, by the amount it took Obama 4 years to decrease.

    As Bob points out, “doubled the deficit” is transparently a lie because the annual deficit is significantly lower in the most recent year compared to the budget the President inherited his first year. But what strikes me is that they aren’t even trying to provide a “truthy” statement like “he has increased the deficit by 25%.” The national DEBT has increased by about 25% (not doubled) over the last three years — largely because of the irresponsibility of the Bush Administration’s tax cuts and the 2007-2009 recession — so if they had the amount of the increase correct they could say “we’ll, you just misunderstood, we meant this President has increased the debt.” But they don’t even have that.

    Nothing even remotely like the truth is in that claim. When is some mainstream outlet going to call the Republicans out on this lie?
