Why Do I Pay Attention to Crazies and Wingnuts?

My Wednesday column. Have at it!

I should note that this column today isn’t about Birthers. It’s about crazy political people in general and, specifically, why I write and talk about them regularly.

Crackpots ascend to higher office almost every year. Voters have elected a broad assortment of weirdos and fringey wackaloons in this country and they always will. Jesse Ventura was the governor of a state. Allen West, Steve King, Michele Bachmann and Louis Gohmert are all sitting members of the House of Representatives despite their Crazy Caucus memberships. Unwavering racists like Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms held multi-term seats in the Senate. Sarah Palin rose to governor of Alaska without much national notice, then ascended to what could have been a heartbeat away from the presidency.

And this is why I talk about and expose crazy people in politics… Continued here.

Well said, Bob, and we appreciate your efforts to report on what the loons are up to. Ignoring the Right is dumb, much as I would prefer to do it.

One quibble, though: Orly Taitz has no chance of making it to the general. None. Zero. Not even if the other candidates are replaced by Kang and Kodos before the primary. And if I’m wrong—it’s happened before—she’ll get squashed like a bitty bug by Diane Feinstein. There are crazies galore here in California, but not enough to turn the sky purple and make the Earth rotate backward.

    Bob, another fine post.

And yes, we need to pay attention the crazies and the wingnuts. We laugh them off at our own risk–because while they may be crazy and nutty, they can, and often do, organize.
