DOJ Drops Charges Against John Edwards

The weasel continues to dance between the rain drops.

The Justice Department’s dismissal of its case against John Edwards on Wednesday brought a close to a controversial prosecution which many campaign finance experts contended was doomed from the outset.

In dismissing the case, Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer said it was DOJ’s duty to “bring hard cases when we believe that the facts and the law support charging a candidate for high office with a crime.”

Breuer said he was proud of the way that federal prosecutors conducted themselves during the trial, but said DOJ would dismiss the five remaining counts on which jurors where unable to reach a verdict.

The good news?

Edwards mistress Rielle Hunter will be out with a book soon and will be featured in an interview on ABC’s 20/20 on June 22.

His continued public humiliation will be fun to watch.

Not sure I get your point, Bob. Did you really want the DOJ to pursue a no-win case? Sure, Edwards is a cheating, lying shitbag, one among zillions. Elizabeth knew of his affair yet encouraged his run for prez. We have some real dangers facing us, like fcking Citizens United buying this election. Let’s focus and leave Edwards to the gossip rags.

It was a weak case from day one. It’s no surprise prosecutors are dropping it.

I really don’t care about the salacious details of his affair with Hunter. I just want him to slink back under the rock he came from.
