McCarthyite of the Day

The Republicans love them some Joe McCarthy — the sweaty freak who thought everyone was a communist, was censured by the Senate, shamed by the nation and died of alcoholism soon after leaving office in disgrace. So hey — why not follow in his footsteps?

Businessman Eric Hovde, who is seeking the Republican nomination for Senate from Wisconsin, said in an interview with The Hill that the presumptive Democratic nominee, Rep. Tammy Baldwin, is a Marxist. “I fundamentally disagree with Tammy on almost everything. She has a more liberal voting record than almost anybody in Congress,” said Hovde. “Her philosophy has its roots in Marxism, communism, socialism, extreme liberalism – she calls it progressivism…”

Red scare! There are Nookular Soviets under your bed! Run away!!

Hovde is a coward and has something in common with many “businessmen” – is is intellectually lazy and dishonest.

It’s important to note that McCarthy (and, I suspect, also Hovde) didn’t actually believe or care that people were communists. He just wanted to exploit and expand on the fear that many felt about communism. The shame of McCarthyism is not only in needlessly pitting Americans against themselves bu in the recklessness with which this blunt instrument is wielded.

From what I’ve read, the FBI was furious when McCarthy started hunting for communists in the government. They knew who most of the real moles were and were using them to feed false information back to the Soviet Union.

If Eric Hovde is so hell bent against Communism why doesn’t he come out against EVERY company that has shipped jobs to China? THAT would be brave…not this petty ass projection onto a political opponent.

Because China are good commies. They want to make money on the very real suffering of its citizens. The way corporate America would like to, if they could get away with it (but are working hard to achieve).

      • D_C_Wilson

The Chinese haven’t been real communists (in the true definition of the word) for decades now. They’ve embraced corporate fascism and just call it communism now. That’s why republicans love China so much now. They wish America was just like them: Highly conformist, personal behavior is rigidly controlled, and you can’t tell where the government ends and corporations begin.

About the only thing they don’t like about China is their reproductive policies. If it were up to the GOP, every one would be required to pop out a “quiverfull” of children, whether they can afford to take care of them or not.

    Commenter Cheshire Cat at TPM:

I wish these reich wingers would stop speaking euphemistically, drop the “socialist” and “communist” labels and just say what they mean…”poopyhead”. Whenever a republican calls someone a socialist or a communist, they aren’t talking about state ownership of the means of production, or are they describing a political philosophy of common ownership of property.

They are simply calling them a “poopyhead,” but trying to say it ina way that won’t offend their mommies and that sounds like the sort of thing they imagine a smart person might say.

    Hard to disagree.

Any republican who calls a democrat a socialist, communist, or Marxist should be immediately challenged to define the word and explain how it applies to the democrat’s record.

I like the way you think.

America needs to take a hard, honest look in the mirror.

You’re welcome. Thanks for sharing…should be seen and thought about by all.

Ever notice that the democrat with the “most liberal voting record in Congress” is always the one that the republican speaking just happens to be running against?
