Mitt Romney is a Lying Liar

Steven Benen caught 21 instances of Mitt Romney lying this past week. That’s at least 21 times. Around three times a day. And these are separate lies — not counting the instances when he repeated a lie several times.

1. Following the Supreme Court’s ruling on Arizona’s anti-immigrant law, Romney said “we are still waiting” for President Obama “to present an immigration plan.”

No, actually, we’re not. Obama endorsed a comprehensive reform plan years ago, and presented his own detailed plan more than a year ago.

2. At a campaign event in Salem, Virginia, Romney said Obama had “all the support he needed” in Congress to pass immigration legislation during his first two years in office.

That’s plainly false. There were Democratic majorities in both chambers, but not enough to overcome Republican filibusters.

3. At the same event, Romney said Obama “did not deal with immigration” policy.

Sure he did. Obama introduced a comprehensive immigration reform proposal; he increased deportations; he strengthened border security; and he used his prosecutorial discretion to implement the goals of the DREAM Act. Romney may not approve of these policies, but he should deny their existence.

Again, the lies are part of his cynical strategy. He’s counting on his idiot followers to not care.

I think he’s counting on the media not to care. This stuff is the new normal, except it’s not even new any more.

Depends on the media source. Unless he sits down with a one on one, (besides Fox) where a knowledgeable interviewer can challenge him, his complete falsehoods will go unanswered. He can stump to a crowd and repeat this stuff, because he knows it won’t be refuted until it doesn’t matter. When eventually confronted, he lets his staff obfuscate, dodge and repeat the prescribed talking points. Maybe this will change after the conventions when actual policy will become more important, but Mitt seems determined not to be pinned down or put into situations where he would actually have to explain himself.

We’ve seen how he handles an instance when confronted by a knowledgeable interviewer like Bob Scheafer: Just talk a lot but say nothing.

Hey, it worked for Sarah Palin:

“In April of 2006, the morning after a debate at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Palin and I were sharing a cup of coffee at the Captain Cook. “I hear you spout off facts and figures with no notes and I’m just amazed, but then I look out over the audience and I wonder if it really makes a difference”, she said to me.

Palin was correct. Having a grasp of the issues and facts didn’t make a damn bit of difference.”

I think there is a typo there…shouldn’t it say,

“…but he should [not] deny their existence”

We need to ask the media to hold themselves to a higher standard and point this crap out, politely.

The conservatives go nuts if a liberal breathes wrong in the media and they send thousands of e-mails asking for a correction. (See Joe Williams )

We need to start asking David Gregory, and the rest of em, to ask more serious questions and follow up when what is said is known to be false. (See Darrel Issa/ Fast and Furious)

I think what’s needed is an ad campaign along the lines of “The Top 50 Lies of Mitt Romney,” and just show video of him saying the lie, then simply have a talking head (Tom Hanks?) say: “Well, that’s a lie….” And then explain the facts, just as you did. There would literally be 50 (or more) ads that would air in constant rotation from now until the election. That would at the very least get the media talking/thinking, and hopefully get the majority of Americans to open their eyes and start thinking critically. The ads should also be supported by a web site that lists all 50 lies and truths (or whatever the number).
