Old People Could Be Their Own 'Death Panel'

From my column yesterday:

Mitt Romney holds a lead among seniors and the trend line is showing that they’ll totally vote for the Republican nominee if the election were held today.

Meanwhile, according to a January Kaiser Health tracking poll, 50 percent of seniors don’t like the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) while just 30 percent hold a favorable view of the healthcare reform law.

Utterly baffling, especially considering how seniors need affordable healthcare in order to, you know, not die.

A Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services study determined that senior citizens more than any other demographic group of Americans benefit from Obamacare. The law hasn’t even really kicked in fully and yet 14.3 million senior citizens have benefitted from the law’s preventative care provisions. In other words, millions of old people have received free preventative care via Medicare that they wouldn’t have received if Obamacare hadn’t been passed.

And so they’re going to vote for the guy who wants to repeal the law. Continued here…

There are less and less reasons for Democrats protect social security and medicare. Screw them, they can go vote for Paul Ryan’s Medicare plan if they want to be that stupid.

If they put Romney over the top electorally, then fuck ‘em.

I wish it were that the elderly that vote for Romney had the benefits of ACA taken away and those that vote for President Obama get to keep them. I don’t want anyone to get hurt or suffer mind you but just maybe it would promote an understanding of sorts. This would allow my Dad to keep his medical benefits given to him by ACA…and that would please me.

Unfortunately, the system doesn’t work like that. If ACA is repealed so as to take the elderly benefits away then all of them would suffer at the hands of the ignorant and misinformed.

Again, the benefits of ACA should be promoted endlessly by the Obama camp on TV and Radio.

“Again, the benefits of ACA should be promoted endlessly by the Obama camp on TV and Radio.”

They are. Just because you’re apparently not aware of it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

The lefty blogosphere has a problem – we advise a lot on how things should be done in the meatspace, but since we’re here on the intertubes most of the time, we aren’t aware that often the things we’re asking for ARE happening (and were happening before it even occured to us to advocate for them).

We’re always going on about “messaging”; how the Democrats aren’t good at it; etc, etc… Well, how the hell would we even know? The only sites we frequent daily are the same klatch of progressive blogs and websites; and I would lay odds that very few of us watch a lot of commercial television (at least not without the ads cut out by our TiVos) or listen to actual non-web radio.

You make some very interesting presumptions about people’s media habits…thank you for that…I guess.

Plus the doughnut hole is closing and that is big money to a senior citizen. Maybe all of the people that they polled are perfectly healthy and don’t need medicine.

    Ha.

Maybe all of the people that they polled are perfectly healthy stupid and don’t think they need medicine.

Gee, Grandma, I’m really glad you’re still happy about your vote for President Romney, but I’m sorry, I can’t give you a ride to your new job at McDonalds.

Pick up some cat food at the grocery store for you? Sure, I can do that, but you don’t have a cat.
