Romney Lie of the Day

Via Benen:

Romney also argued, “That stimulus he put in place, it didn’t help private sector jobs; it helped preserve government jobs.”

That’s the exact opposite of reality.

Government jobs have actually been crumbling (real people with real lives — not to be celebrated) while private sector jobs are increasing due to the stimulus. Ashby posted about this earlier in the week. To repeat:

A new Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report estimates that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) increased the number of people employed by between 200,000 and 1.5 million jobs in March. In other words, between 200,000 and 1.5 million people employed in March owed their jobs to the Recovery Act. This estimate, by Congress’ non-partisan economic and budget analysts, is more comprehensive than the 160,000 jobs that ARRA recipients reported in April, CBO explains.

That was in March. It doesn’t even take into account the broader impact of the stimulus on the economy and jobs.

Again, Mitt Romney is counting on his supporters to be ignorant and stupid. The most lie-based candidate for president ever.

He’ll keep it up as long as no one challenges him. By September, everything he says will be accepted as truth, absorbed by osmosis by the uninformed electorate. The millions in super pac money will seal the deal. Sorry, I’m just not feeling very optimistic these days.

    • JackDaniel07

Im tellin ya, everywhere I turn – internet, grocery store, work – I see blind ignorant allegiance to anything anyone NOT OBAMA. Turnout will be more important than ever.

    • Scopedog

Ned, now’s not the time to throw in the towel. Hell, we should’ve expected the MSM to give Romney a pass.

But some are calling him out on it, and we need to get on the MSM’s case as well. Throwing up our hands and calling it quits isn’t going to help.

    • pgeorge

Ned, at least go down fighting! Don’t just give up and let it wash over you…. I’m not as pessimistic as you are. People ARE fighting back, voter suppression is being challenged, the electoral votes are still in Obama’s favor – and Romney continues to alienate women and minorities every time he opens his mouth. We just need to get everyone to the polls!

      • Victor_the_Crab

Hear hear! Sometimes I think we should all just break out the straight razors and let people just slash their own wrists, what with all the doom and gloom here about November. Does everyone believe Obama’s just going to roll over and die? I don’t think so!

  • jimtowndem

I will make a prediction here. Mittens will win the election and by july there will be no more social security, medicare or aca. and then wait until the tp’s don’t get a check in the mail for ss and the world will blow up.

    • GrafZeppelin127

I wouldn’t go as far as that. SS & Medicare aren’t going anywhere soon, and I even think the ACA is safe for now.

Romney will do two things as president: (1) see to it that his class doesn’t have to pay any taxes or comply with any laws, and (2) take us into another war.

      • http://drangedinaz.wordpress.com/ IrishGrrrl

The thought of us getting into another war makes me physically ill.

I can’t wait for a debate between President Obama and Romney. President Obama, I hope, will take off the gloves and go bare-knuckle style and Romney will be wearing…mittens.

    • GrafZeppelin127

I’d agree, if the debates were actual debates. As it is, they’re opportunities to recite prepared talking points and mini-speeches. The questions don’t matter and what the other candidate says don’t matter.

  • GrafZeppelin127

He lies because the people who are purchasing the presidency for him, and the voters who will give those purchasers their proverbial receipt, do not require him to tell the truth.

    • Brutlyhonest

Also, too: The news organizations have abdicated their responsibility to report facts. Neutering actual reporting is the real victory for the murdoch/ailes empire, not providing a propaganda outlet. People who solely watch faux are not having their minds changed.

A lot (most?) people still get their daily news feed from one of the networks’ evening broadcasts. Using cbs last night as an example, they now think scott walker created a surplus from a deficit without hurting anyone. No mention of his tax cuts creating the deficit or the use of federal funds to plug holes he created. They also thing the world is coming to an end based on the jobs report and “the DOW” being down. The only “hard” question I heard asked during the broadcast was aimed at Sister what’s-her-name who sent a letter back to the pope saying she disagreed with his assessment of her organization.

With this passing for news and the constant lies from superpac commercials, it’s actually no wonder these low info voters are so misinformed.

      • GrafZeppelin127

“Low info voters” acquire just enough info to validate their prejudices, and ignore everything else. If I had a dime for every time I heard a GOP fan cite some cherry-picked, context-free “fact” and call it “all you need to know,” I would be able to bankroll Obama’s campaign my self.

    Eugene Robinson on Monday:

There are those who tell the truth. There are those who distort the truth. And then there’s Mitt Romney.

Every political campaign exaggerates and dissembles. This practice may not be admirable — it’s surely one reason so many Americans are disenchanted with politics — but it’s something we’ve all come to expect. Candidates claim the right to make any boast or accusation as long as there’s a kernel of veracity in there somewhere.

Even by this lax standard, Romney too often fails. Not to put too fine a point on it, he lies. Quite a bit.

    Hard to argue with that.

    He concludes:

He seems to believe voters are too dumb to discover what the facts really are — or too jaded to care.

    On both counts, I disagree.

On both counts, I hope Robinson’s right.

One thing we need to do is point out to everyone that government jobs ARE JOBS , just as real and sometimes MORE beneficial – teachers, firefighters, etc. – than jobs in the corporate world. It is amazing to me how many people look as if the thought has never occurred to them when I point out that people holding GOVERNMENT JOBS are our own neighbors and family members, the same people who support local stores and businesses and keep the economy rolling – and NOT mindless minions of some evil Empire. And ask them if they’d rather be controlled by corporations than by something (people) they can still vote for.
