Chart of the Day

According to a recent Pew Research Center poll, less than a quarter of all Americans believe raising taxes on the wealthy will harm the economy.

And for comparison’s sake — roughly the same percentage (22) of people believe in the Loch Ness Monster. Significantly larger portions of the nation believe in UFOs and that George W. Bush was a great president.

The Republicans have lost on this issue. Full stop.

It’s also half the percentage of those who think it will help the economy. They’ve lost big.

The poll question above is bizarre. Will taxing the rich more “help” the economy?

What the question really seems to query is simply how Americans understand the relationship between taxing and economic health. And apparently, way too many think more taxing results in a better economy, when they ought to understand that a better economy results in more tax revenue.

Well then, that’s a problem for conservatives, isn’t it? That’s been the message for thirty years and yet you still haven’t persuaded the American people. Maybe the conservative messaging machine needs a tuneup. Maybe the fact record low taxes on the wealthy have failed to motivate them to create jobs has made people skeptical. You might want to check on some of those things.

Yes, it is a problem for conservatives. And it is a problem for the USA. That poll shows how depressingly clueless a large % of Americans are about the economy.
