Fox News: Pollution's Got What Plants Crave

Yes. Really. Screencap via Grist:

As Grist pointed out, nitrogen in pollution helps trees initially — then the pollution kills them.

The trees run on regular unleaded now.

But… but their hero St. Ronny of Reagan once claimed that trees cause pollution. What bullshit am I supposed to believe in?

Fox is playing off of the American sheeples tendency to accept Bumper sticker thinking, to look no further than next week, and to play the “I’ve got mine, so go f*ck yourself” game. Maybe it’s not just Americans’ tendencies….humanity’s then. The irony is that our direct ancestors emerged during one of the “warm periods” and we’ll probably die out during a “warm period”.

    PS: Interesting info at: http://www.giss.nasa.gov/research/features/199704_pliocene/page2.html

PSS: There has to be money to be made in the future for domed, climate controlled living environments…or spaceships to get us off this beautiful gift of a planet that we’ve poisoned….which gives me an idea for a book I’m writing, that no one will be around to read in the future that won’t happen….dark mood settling in…….

Nah it’s just corporate thinking. Everything is about the next quarter, next business year. It’s about profit and nothing else.

Look at the BP Oil spill in the Gulf. A rational person looking at the big picture would say “This pipe will probably rupture, and the resulting loss of oil, bad publicity and environmental damage will cost us exponentially more then if we halt production, and fix the problem.” That’s how an enlightened self-interested capitalist is supposed to think.

Unfortunately even if some manager forwarded a memo like that to the higher ups he or she would 1) Risk being replaced for bringing that situation to light because of the legality of it, or simply because it’s not profit-centric thinking. 2) That manager would forfeit his or her production bonus for the quarter “Yeah you fixed the problem, but production was down so you’re being replaced and you get no bonus.” The person after him or her would benefit.

And that’s it in a nutshell. It’s about how you, and you alone, can benefit right now. Those problems you create are the next person’s to worry about. That’s unregulated corporate capitalism and without a government body beholden to the public interest that sits them in the corner when they behave like petulant children it won’t change.

Sure, just to save face or to win a debate, we’ve all been guilty at times of distorting things to corroborate our views, even to the point of stretching the limits of credibility, but what Fox is doing is in a class all by itself. It’s breathtaking in its effrontery and its contrariness to reality. Fox News: Come for the crazy, stay for the brazen bullshit.
