Homemaker Job Training

The Southern Poverty Law Center has filed a formal complaint with the Department of Labor over a federally-funded, veteran’s job-training provider that is only offering courses in How To Be a Housewife to female veterans.

The Southern Poverty Law Center filed a sex-discrimination complaint on Wednesday against the Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM). According to the complaint, which was filed with the U.S. Department of Labor, the ABCCM, which “is a cooperative ministry of churches in Asheville and Buncombe County, North Carolina that provides assistance and services to the homeless, veterans and families in poverty,” has been excluding female veterans from the job training services offered to men.

The ABCCM receives federal funding specifically for its “Veterans Employment & Training Services,” which self-purportedly provides “skills assessment, training, job placement and coaching for those seeking new career level jobs to break the bonds of homelessness and poverty.” But, Emily Bagby, one of the female Army veterans represented by the Law Center, alleges that ABCCM had gender-segregated training programs that offered women only poor quality services.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, instead of being offered job training, Bagby was only offered courses in knitting, meditation, and bible study, among other things.

Essential skills for making it in the 21st century. In the third world.

All things considered, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Republicans believe those should be considered job training. And the name of the job they train you for is called Barefoot And Pregnant.

As a one time decade+ long resident of Asheville, NC, I can state without hesitation that ABCCM is a vile organization stuck in the Stone Age.

Which is obvious from this item, but still. They have refused food, and even shelter — in the middle of winter, to those who wouldn’t proclaim Jesus their lord and saviour. Their federal funding would have been stripped long ago, but for the Xtian Bushites rampant in mid-level government bureaucracy. Hopefully this will do it.

Damn. Maybe if I had just taken their class, I could have saved my marraige, and thus relied on my husband’s job to support me.

Grrrr………it is a continual amazement to me that we are STILL fighting these battles whereby women are discriminated against because we don’t have a penis. It pisses me off!!!

I was going to save this for another time, but it seems on-topic somehow.

Knitting is important Nicole. How else can these women who’ve served in the armed forces ever hope to truly mean something to the rest of MANkind without conforming to an oppressive gender role?

I’m shocked “Proper Foot Attire Retrieval” i.e. slipper fetching wasn’t on the class list.

Yeah putting government money in the hands of churches is such a good thing. It won’t lead to this kind of crap at all. Oh wait… It has! Maybe that was the point.

Yeah, my Mother always told my brothers that they should look for a woman who knit, disliked shoes, and worshiped pregnancy.
Both, did I miss out on all three counts.

These religious jerks just can’t help themselves. They’re freaking control freaks with tiny penes!

[T]he ministry didn’t allow female veterans to take the same classes offered to men, such as truck driving, culinary arts and training for “green” jobs. Instead, the women were offered training in such things as knitting, art therapy, yoga, meditation, how to de-clutter your room, self-esteem and Bible study.

Them’s some real fine skills for wimmenfolk.

    Put another way …

When women finally take over the known universe, and not just the universe in my heart, I want it to be on record that I will open all the jars they use to store the repressive male brains.

It’s an evangelical republican dream world!

This is why I’m not a fan of giving government money to churches to perform charitable acts. They almost always impose a set of conditions to receive any assistance. Basically they hold it hostage until you hear a sermon.

Now it seems with this organization they’re perpetrating something even more vile. What is the point in this? Even if you agree with this horseshit of women staying home and being a caretaker based solely on their sex the reality is most families have two adults who work. It’s the reality we’re face with today.

Can’t we move past this? Can we just stop oppressing women? I know it’s a lot to ask for but seriously this shit is just obscene at this point.

What ever happened to standards and decency? I’m sick to death of how the GOP in particular has been treating women lately. From Sandra Fluke to the slew of anti-abortion legislation to something like this. How is this tolerated in any way shape or form? Women who served in our Armed Forces are being discriminated against. It’s a freaking embarrassment. Strip this organization of its funding.
