Paul Ryan Was the Smart Choice

If Sarah Palin represents the most irresponsible decision John McCain and the Republican Party had ever made, the selection of Paul Ryan seems like a no-brainer smart choice for Mitt Romney.

The press is deferential to Ryan because he comports himself as a very serious budget wonk (we all know he’s an Ayn Rand crackpot who’s all too willing to genuflect to Glenn Beck et al); he’s another “central casting” Republican presidential stereotype who will ultimately run circles around Romney on the campaign trail unlike, say, Chris Christie who probably wouldn’t have survived the rigors of a national campaign; and he hails from a swing state.

Credit where credit is due, Romney could’ve picked a fire-eater like Santorum, Gingrich or Christie and he went with someone who is absolutely the opposite of Sarah Palin. Paul Ryan is wrong on everything, but he’s not a moron.

All that said, Ryan’s influence on a would-be Romney White House would be utterly disastrous for the economy and the instantaneous austerity measures, along with the dismantling of the Obama agenda, would spell doom for millions of working and middle class Americans. On the other side of a four-to-eight year Romney term will be a privatized Medicare, massive deficits from radical tax cuts for the rich, and an economic depression without any real ability for the government to inject emergency cash into the economy.

But if Romney really wants to win this thing, he made the right choice. For him and the Republicans. The rest of us will be screwed a thousand different ways.

Made the mistake of watching MTP this morning.

Pretty awful stuff overall. Reince Priebus lying through his teeth unchallenged; David Axelrod losing his shit in response to David Gregory’s blatant GOP/Romney shillery; Bill Bennett (yes, Bill effing Bennett), and Rich Lowry being a total douchenozzle to Rachel Maddow while repeating (and demanding that Rachel “defend”) the latest Republican talking point, which is essentially a variation on Michelle Bachmann’s zombie lie that Obama “stole from Medicare to pay for Obamacare,” except apparently the amount that Obama supposedly stole from Medicare to pay for Obamacare has increased from $500B to $700B.

Why I put myself through this I don’t know.

It’s why I sleep in Sundays now. There’s nothing worth watching in the morning.

It’s a smart choice Bob, if you’re trying to get the Tea Party nutjob base into getting behind a guy who, so far, has been a disasterous Republican candidate for president. But if Paul Ryan’s own background of Ayn Rand beliefs and his desire to implement the true ugliness of Republican style governance gets exposed – and it will, no matter how much slobbering the zombified MSM have given him – then a lot more undecided voters will choose President Obama come November. Hell, I think the Democratic base will solidify even further behind Obama because of Mitt Romney’s VP pick.

“then a lot more undecided voters will choose President Obama come November.”

Not only that, but wait until the real truth on Ryan starts to surface. This guy is portrayed as some kind of economic genius; when in fact, his economic plans scare the shit out of most responsible republicans. If nothing else, they have been afraid of losing their jobs. Paul Ryan has had limited exposure–more than the average congressman to be sure–but wait until the intensity cranks up. He will be shown to be what he really is: mean, arrogant, condescending, and not as smart as some think. He is a younger version of Willard.

It’ll get exposed. Team Obama is frighteningly good at controlling a news cycle and defining their opponents, and Mitt is in the Bush League. I guess when you have an entire network as your media arm you get lazy.

I completely disagree. He was a dumb choice. And here’s Booman to sum up why:

It’s a really dumb choice if you’re trying to appeal to moderates, but it’s a smart choice if your strategy to turn out the base in huge numbers while suppressing the vote among groups that tend to vote democratic.

    Oh wait.

It was a dumb choice besides the fact it doesn’t help Romney with anyone but the conservative Tea Tard base, but Obama is a different kind of Democrat. Team Obama has learned how to manipulate a news cycle. Look at what they’ve been doing to Romney his entire campaign. The timing of Obama’s gay marriage support was brilliant. It was just “Go fuck yourself” to Mitt’s talking point for that week.

“I’m here to talk about the economy, not gay marriage.” HA! Tough luck.

Look at the tax return fight that the press is helping with because the Democrats are putting it out there in a way they can’t ignore it. It’s low hanging fruit and the MSM is lazy as hell. If this had been the Kerry campaign they would’ve taken “the high road” to focus on the issues and be getting creamed now.

Ryan was a dumb choice because he’s so extreme. He’s got a lot of open spots, and within an hour Team Obama was already defining him. Hell they were doing that BEFORE he was picked. By October he’ll be defined in the voters’ minds and he doesn’t have that exotic “Oh this is new!” Sarah Palin briefly enjoyed before it was confirmed what an idiot she is.

Romney tried to get out of the corner by clutching, and Obama just pushed him right back and went to work on the body. This was a desperate pick and it’s gonna cost him the election.
