Quote of the Morning

“Ayn Rand is one of those things that a lot of us, when we were 17 or 18 and feeling misunderstood, we’d pick up. Then, as we get older, we realize that a world in which we’re only thinking about ourselves and not thinking about anybody else, in which we’re considering the entire project of developing ourselves as more important than our relationships to other people and making sure that everybody else has opportunity – that that’s a pretty narrow vision. It’s not one that, I think, describes what’s best in America. Unfortunately, it does seem as if sometimes that vision of a “you’re on your own” society has consumed a big chunk of the Republican Party.” President Obama

In other words, Rand is kid’s stuff. So grow up and get over it.

Exactly right.

Thanks for posting this quote from PBO!

one of my 3 sons read Ayn Rand & his attitude did change at the time. The family didn’t appreciate the change & he heard about it from all of us.
    He soon changed his tune.

    No man is an island.

conservatives say the same thing about us….that our rosy peaceful vision doesn’t jibe with reality, and eventually we all grow up and get families and start looking out for ourselves.

I really believe the major difference between the parties is that our side is always looking at the big picture, “how will these policies affect EVERYONE”, and not just our country but the whole globe, and republicans often blatantly admit, they want to know “how does this affect ME?”

Exactly, liberals are the only grown ups in the room. It’s get a little old sometimes, but in the end following the “golden rule” moral compass is always the right thing to do and I wouldn’t have it any other way. So Ayn Rand and her adherents can just bite me.

Looking out for yourself is one thing. Making a virtue out of abject selfishness is quite another. Rand basically gives her readers permission to live life without a conscience.

I imagine those who subscribe to the Ayn Rand “philosophy,” when they read Lord of the Flies, see Jack as the hero and Ralph as the villain.

    Greed & selfishness codified.

If I were Paul Ryan, I’d be crying and pouting because the President is so mean. Also because my political career is nearly over.

    • BuffaloBuckeye

That, and Ryan believes that rape is another form of conception.

This made me shudder (too close to the truth of what his ilk believe)

  • agrazingmoose

I tried to read Rand in college and was so bored that I gave up.

The whole libertarian philosophy is one of a rebellious 15-year old: “Don’t tell me what to do!!!!”

I bet that whole corner of the internet exploded in impotent fanboy rage today. That group is incredibly easy to troll.

When I first read Atlas Shrugged I saw it for what it was. An interestingly written piece of fiction and for what it was worth I probably lit up a joint and continued to read it knowing how ridiculous it really was.

Ayn Rand. The patron saint of sociopaths.
