Balance Versus Extremism

EJ Dionne’s endorsement of the president:

This election does not represent a choice between left and right. It represents a choice between balance and a new, extreme form of conservatism. This new conservatism cannot accept any tax increases as part of a deal to reduce the deficit. For all his attempts to sound moderate in the campaign’s closing days, Romney has not altered the response he gave during a Republican-primary debate rejecting a hypothetical deal involving a 10-to-1 ratio between spending cuts and tax increases. This refusal to acknowledge the need for more revenue is a recipe for eviscerating government—and the cuts, as Ryan’s budget shows, would fall disproportionately on programs for Americans with the lowest incomes.

The new right has broken with conservatism’s past—and our country’s most constructive traditions—by adopting a new and radical individualism that largely ignores our country’s gift for community.

This echoes Douglas Brinkley’s Rolling Stone piece in which he calls the president “The Progressive Firewall” against the rising tide of radical conservatism.

My wife and I own a bookstore here in Charlotte, NC, and we were privileged to meet Mr. Dionne during the DNC when he came in for a talk and booksigning. (I’ve enjoyed his columns for many years.) We had the day before been burned by two supposedly liberal authors who were complete dicks to our staff (I will not name them because I don’t want them to get any more attention). Mr. Dionne, by contrast, was a complete gentleman who was warm and friendly and had an audience of thirty people or so (it was a 1 pm signing on a weekday, not an optimal time) hanging on his every word, and inscribed a copy of his book to my wife and me saying, “With gratitude for your warm and generous hospitality, for preserving the tradition of independent bookselling, and for your commitment to our republic.” One of the best booksignings we have ever hosted. The guy is a class act.
