Obama’s Historic Victory and the Revenge of the Nerds

My Wednesday column. Initial reaction to the president’s re-election…

As I wrote on Twitter last night as the networks called the election for the president: Thank you, America. Seriously. Thank you. Gratefully, American voters decided to reject a CEO shape-shifter and re-elect the leader who not only rescued the economy from disaster but who passed a law that will allow me and millions of others to receive affordable health care.

I assure you, I will not take the results of this election for granted. And I won’t forget how dangerously close we were to coming up short. There’s still a pile of work to do to fight back against the cynical, obstructionist Republicans and dark money groups who came this close to winning.

We’ll surely spend the next several weeks evaluating how President Obama won the election and how Mitt Romney lost it. But I can’t help but to think that too many voters decided that Romney was out of touch and regressive, while the president was diligent, tough, honest and, in many ways, historically successful (see aforementioned rescue from a second Great Depression). That said, Romney nearly pulled it off using the same kinds of slippery, under-the-table techniques that are too-often used by corporations to deceive consumers and investors.

Speaking of trickery and deception, this election is a massive victory for, affectionately, the nerds, and a major loss for obsolete pundits who think they can continue to get away with making prognostications based on “gut” and anecdotal observations. [continued]

    Nice way to wake up!

    OBAMA RE-ELECTED.
Early voting results indicate he owes the traditional progressive coalition, so let’s hold his damn feet to the stovetop, fuck the ‘Grand Bargain’ bullshit. He’s not been terrible, surprisingly and pleasingly positive in many arenas, and I again have hope. But it’s up to us to tell him what we expect, and grade him on that.

MN MARRIAGE AMENDMENT CRUMPLED UP IN THE DUSTBIN.
I longed for sweet, smooth fundie tears to adorn my breakfast. Pancakes?

MN PHOTO VOTER AMENDMENT NOT ALLOWED.
I’m a cynic, and actually, thought this one would pass handily, as people are dumb. Must re-calibrate something…

CHIP CRAVAACK WILL WORK FOR FOOD
2010 Teabagger surf-pony Chip ‘Chip’ Cravaack has been sent back to Aitkin, where he will end up selling the extra ‘A’ to buy matches for heat.

TOMMY THOMPSON IN WI TAKES UP FULL TIME ALCOHOLISM
Yay Tammy Baldwin! I have a relation who knows Tammy pretty well and says she is very cool, and everything I’ve seen, she is, so GO GET ‘EM TAMMY. And, Thompson suffering has it’s own particular odeur of schadenfreude!

    TEH BAD.

    BATSHIT SHELLEY LIKELY STAYS
90% + counted, and she has a 1% margin, not sure of the re-count trigger, half a percent? She was a teabagger (Marcus’s ears perk up) before it was cool…

The facts are these: Democrats don’t have a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate and do not control the House. Mitch McConnell remains as obstinate as ever and John Boehner (meaning Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan, et al) aren’t far behind. The President, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi will have to deal with Republicans to get anything done. Note that I said “deal with” not “capitulate to”. It is incumbent upon them to find responsible Republicans who can make a difference to deal with (a novel idea I know and pretty near impossible unless they have a “come to Jeebus” moment in short order).

The big difference between now and the last four years for the Administration when dealing with congressional Republicans is that now, when the Republicans holler “Tea Party!”, Democrats can respond with, “How’d that work out for you in 2012?” And when the few remaining Tea Partiers threaten across-the-aisle-reaching-Republicans with primary challenges, they can respond with, “So, this means you want a Democrat elected?”

    Punditry is dead.

That’s not to say there isn’t a place for smart opinion shows like Rachel, or even dumb opinion shows like Hannity, but the days of “now we bring in Republican Strategist Wrongy McWrongerson,” should be over.

These people were jaw-droppingly wrong in every way. The fact that “very serious” people were predicting a Romney landslide on Monday is laughable and they shouldn’t be allowed on television ever again. If you were a surgeon and did something that far off in your job, you’d be in fucking jail.

And Karl Rove. Karl, Karl, Karl. I don’t blame the guy for shitting himself on live television last night, I’d freak out if I had just blown half a billion dollars too. Hell, I get pissed when I have to throw out a quarter pound of spoiled turkey. Rove should be placed on house arrest for the remainder of his miserable pig vomit existence after committing such a criminal act.

The election? Or his outing Valerie Plame as a CIA agent? Bet he wishes he was Ham Rove right now.

  • The_Dork_Knight

Last night was pretty damn glorious. Now we need to figure out how to get under 30 voters out for a midterm election so we can take back the house in two years.

Politically speaking, I think this ranks very close to the top priority for the Democratic party and progressives in general.

LMAO this morning — the Koch brothers spent a fortune on dogfood, and the dog wouldn’t eat it!

Also, Mourdock and Akin tanked. Don’t mess with the ladies! Yeehaw!
