President Gets Emotional During Remarks to Volunteers

You might’ve seen this last night when it began to go viral, but just in case, here’s the video of the president addressing his Chicago campaign volunteers. The whole thing is wonderful, but the waterworks begin around 3:30.

I have no idea what he’s thinking, but perhaps all of the recent displays of emotion are indicative of the fact that he feels like he’s really, really done it this time. He’s not just a one-election fluke. He’s an historic two-term president who’s achieved something very few others have, and he’s done so on a wave of millions of people who worked tirelessly to protect the social justice and basic human rights he stands for.

On the flip side, the Rmoney campaign cancelled the credit cards of their campaign staff as soon as the results were in, not even paying for their cab ride home from the campaign offices. I wonder if Mitt gathered his staff to blame them for his loss and fire them after the election.

    Beautiful thing.

I swear, if anyone tells me Obama is a phony and those tears are bullshit, I’m gonna skew off their balls or their nipples. In this current climate, for this particular man, of all people, to shed tears, is a truly gutsy thing. But you know what? He’s not even thinking about that, he’s just being genuine, letting the tear-chips fall where they may. Of course, Laura Ingraham and her ignoble ilk will just mock him for not crying manly tears of yellow mustard.

      …like John Boehner? EWWW!

I saw this yesterday and immediately began crying right along with him. This President has been treated particularly badly by racists wingnuts and I’m including members of congress. This is why this victory was so much sweeter. I said this yesterday….I really love this President and I don’t think I’ve ever said that about ANY President. No, I don’t agree with everything he’s done but, I still believe that everything he’s done has been in an attempt to bring this country together. What the asshole pundits don’t seem to understand is that this requires willing partners and he hasn’t had that. This makes this win sweet revenge!

I’m a graduate student in History. People have asked me what I thought about President Obama and I’ve told them “He has the potential to be one of our greatest Presidents.”

Now I get accused of bias as soon as I say that, and there is some truth to that. And there’s a lot that can happen between now and 2016, but when you look at the seriousness President Obama treats his office. When you see the genuine caring and compassion that he has for not only the people of the US but for the rest of the world he really does have the making to be a Great Man in the historical sense of the term. What amazing times we’re living in.

    Best.President.EVER

He sees himself as part of us, he champions the people instead of the ruling class. He is a wonderful human being………..a mensch.

    I love this president.

Another thing no one is acknowledging is that he’s probably exhausted. Not that his emotions aren’t genuine, because I believe they are. But when you’re really, really tired it’s harder to keep emotions under lock and key. And he’s known for his control over emotions.

I liked the part where he says [paraphrasing] ‘when people ask me how I can stand it, when things are really difficult, I think of you all, you give me hope’. That moved me to tears.

By the way, what he said to his young staffers is spot on. They were outstanding and I, like the President have no doubt that many of them will go on to do great things. How could they not when they get that kind of statement from this extrodinary man? Oh Damn! I’ve gotta go….the water works are back!

Honesty, thoughtfulness and sincerity. Basic traits republicans lost decades ago.

And this is the guy GOP fans say “hates” … well, everything?

I have never gotten the sense, from watching or listening to him, reading his writings, etc., that President Obama “hates,” or even has the capacity to “hate,” anyone or anything.

Seriously, how could a person who is purportedly so filled with “hate” and “rage” have a truly, clearly genuine and heartfelt emotional response like this?

One of the things that have driven me nuts these past four years is how many pundits (I’m looking at you, Chris Matthews) have stated emphatically that this president has no emotion – no connection to real people. it could be my bias, but I have never gotten that vibe from Obama. in fact, quite the opposite, and I believe he is incredibly compassionate and emotionally involved.

A genuine and lovely human being. I am so proud to have this man as my President.

I’m continuously amazed by the human condition. To think where we were back in ’04 with George W. Bush winning a second term if you told me “It’s okay. In 8 years America will re-elect a genuine leader. That young Senator from Illinois who gave the keynote address will be your President. You’ll not only volunteer for him, give his campaign money, but you’ll be invested in our Democracy like you’ve never been before. Your fellow citizens will stand in line in Florida and Ohio for hours on end just to cast their vote for him. He’ll take a stand on gay marriage and announce it to the world. Three states will vote to legalize equality for those who don’t have it. Young people from other countries will come up to you at ETSU and tell you how much they love your President. They’ll tell conservatives how lucky are to have him as a leader and they’ll say it with conviction. America will elect its first gay senator two years after Russ Fiengold will lose his seat to a Tea Party Republican. There will be even worse vitriol and hate from the Right then there is now but this President will not only defeat them he’ll form a new coalition based on African Americans, Hispanics, Gays, and Women and it will beat the White Establishment’s strangle hold. The Democrats will be united and stronger then ever and the GOP will be lost in the wilderness.”

If you told me that 8 years ago I would’ve looked at you like you were crazy. But here we are. We are so blessed to have a President like Barack Obama.

  • bphoon

He’s publicly giving credit where it’s due. The hallmark of a truly great leader.

  • laddieluv

…I simply love President Obama …a man with a working heart ♥…

  • Victor_the_Crab

What those people did for President Obama is truly amazing. They put in a Herculian effort to get their message out there against a whole barrage of dark money, lies, and flat out ignorance that would have done in any ordinary Democratic ticket in the past. They deserve all the praise they can get, from the president and everyone else.
