Virginia GOP Wants to Mandate Guns in Schools

A reasonable person would consider taking measures to ensure guns are kept as far away from schools as possible in light of recent events, but Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell is not reasonable.

McDONNELL: I know there has been a knee-jerk reaction against that, I think there should at least be a discussion of that. If people were armed, not just a police officer, but other school officials who were trained and chose to have a weapon, certainly there would be an opportunity to stop aggressors trying to come into the school, so I think that’s a reasonable discussion that ought to be had.

Of course there’s been a knee-jerk reaction against more guns in schools. And no, there’s nothing reasonable about arming school officials.

Apparently some in the state legislature agree with him though.

A Virginia legislator says he will introduce a bill mandating teachers or other school personnel to carry concealed weapons, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday.

The proposal from state Sen. Robert G. Marshall (R) comes in response to last week’s mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. Wenzel J. Cummings, the state lawyer charged with drafting the legislation, originally questioned whether the legislature has the authority to require teachers to carry weapons to school rather than authorizing them do so.

A big government mandate.

How will we pay for this? Will you dip into the education budget? Are mandates suddenly acceptable? Can we mandate guns in schools but not healthcare?

Governor Ultrasound has always been cool with government mandates.

So what’s the penalty if a teacher refuses to carry a gun? Who’s liable if a teacher is the one who snaps and starts shooting up the place?

Think about what the message here is: We’re not going to do anything that might prevent school massacres. We’re just going to take the Dodge City approach to security.

The first time a teacher snaps and shoots a student, they’ll blame the union.

We have a real problem on our hands. This is no joke, half this country is f!#&ing CRAZY!!!

Mix more kids with more guns??? WTF!!! I’m getting physically angry now.

Guns are pretty expensive. Will this mandate come with subsidized weapons, allowing these union thug lazy leeching librul teachers to further indoctrinate our children with socialist ideas while sucking on the teat of Amurka’s hard working makers? Or will these heroic supermen and women purchase the weapons with their own well earned compensation for all the hard work they do protecting and educating our children?

they’ll prolly get a discount at Dick’s Sporting goods store to stock up like they do at Michaels Craft Center, where they purchase all of their own freakin teacher supplies. More oil subsidies anyone??

When I lived in FL about 20 years ago and was a probation officer, the state didn’t mandate that I carry a gun BUT it was optional. Of course, I had to pay out of pocket for the weapon, the ammo, and the fees for certification which I HAD to have periodically to carry. Mind you I made less than $23,000 per year after taxes to supervise about 150 felons in the community. Plus I was required to do field work using my own car–I spent untold hours trying to find my offenders homes and places of work. I went into crack houses–all while unarmed, no phone (this was back in the day of “brick” cell phones), no partner or backup….I really could have used a weapon but the cheap ass Republican state government wouldn’t pay for one and they wouldn’t pay me enough money to be able to afford one. This is what a GOP government gives you–stupid, stupid policies.

I’m a teacher. Should I carry my gun around campus at all times, in a holster? If I see an unknown person on campus, maybe a parent who didn’t check in at the office, and I ask who he is and he reaches for his wallet to show me his ID, should I be ready to shoot? He might be going for a gun. Will I be cleared of wrongdoing if I accidentally shoot a kid instead of him?

This is SO stupid. I can’t believe we’re having this conversation. Let’s arm the cashiers at the grocery store and ushers at the movie theater while we’re at it.

This is why I remain cynical at attempts for any form of gun control legistlation to become law. As long as there are enough Republican nuts like Bob McDonnell out there offering up batshit ideas about this, then nothing will change.

The hypocrisy and the irony will never, ever penetrate their tiny little minds.
