Americans Fall Asleep on Gun Control. Again.

Via David Frum:

Blame it on the fiscal cliff, blame it on Christmas, blame it on our ability to forget, but the national discussion about gun control has once again ebbed. Mentions of the term “gun control” on television, in newspapers, and in online media are down to pre-Sandy Hook levels, according to the Nexis database.

Inexcusable. This is why nothing serious is ever done about this issue, and I assure you: the NRA never sleeps.

You’ve probably noticed already, but much like I did with the healthcare reform debate and the BP oil spill, I intend to make gun control posts a central focus of the blog. So, you know, deal with it.

I think the NRA was counting on this. When can we label them a terrorist group?

When can we label them a terrorist group?

At least thirty years ago, by my reckoning.

20 babies get killed America get piss for a few weeks then go meh when “American Idol” is coming on? I swear the attention span of the average American is shorter than a housefly life span.

OK by me, Bob. Thanks for keeping on it.

GOOD. This is what it’s going to require to accomplish something.

FUCK the 2nd Amendment, which is outdated as hell, and infringes on OUR rights to feel safe on our own streets, goddammit!

SCREW these wingnuts who apparently harbor a desire to instill fear in all of our citizens!

The second amendment actually isnt outdated, it just never meant what the NRA say it means. They have been allowed to redefine the second amendment their way for the past 40 years, now I hear they are pushing to make silencers OK to use.
Nothing will change until we change our countries perception of deadly weapons as tools of defence, and we get the NRA out of the way.

Yes, you’re right, however, the 2nd is outdated if we view it through the context of our times.

The fact that we have allowed the right wing to redefine it is another valid reason why we must now go forward and roll back the idea that guns, other than in very limited forms, are necessary to our way of life.

Liberty, hell……….the NRA and its disciples has enslaved us!

Guess we will have to see if there is an uptick when new legislation is proposed.
As I, and many people have said here before, there is no logical argument for the continued open and free market of assault rifles and related technology.

And don’t start the “..but the 2nd Amendment clearly says..” BS. The constitution is an important document, but it also has been found to be a flawed one and amended 27 times. One amendment is not more valid or sacred than another. Especially when most pro-gun people (how claim such constitution purity) would throw out the 1st, 15th, and 19th in a heartbeat (they already cheered the end round developed for the 4th under Bush).

      And the 14th.

  • Victor_the_Crab

I’m not in the least bit surprised the American public’s attention over the events in Newtown have wained considerably. This is exactly what the NRA was hoping would happen, so that they could gather up their forces and go full blown attack against those looking for sanity in this very unhealthy gun culture.

Good luck Bob. You are in the fight of your life against these sick people.

Today, the president listed gun control as one of the five policy goals he wants to accomplish in his second term. Even if the media has forgotten, he hasn’t.
