Shocker! Tough Gun Control Laws = Less Gun Violence

This study is extremely valuable, and, you know, duh.

A San Francisco-based policy center on gun control laws has produced a report that says states with strict gun laws have the lowest gun-related death rates. In contrast, it reports, states with the highest per capita gun death rates have “weak” gun laws.

The study by the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence is touted by Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) as support for his own legislation tightening California’s current assault weapon ban. The bill, SB47, would prohibit semiautomatic weapons from having devices that allow them to carry high-capacity magazines or easily be reloaded with multiple rounds of ammunition. A similar version of the bill failed to pass in 2012. [...]

Yee notes that the law center cited low per-capita gun death rates in Hawaii, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut — states that the law center identified as having some of the toughest gun laws in the country.

He failed to mention the law center also included California on its list of states with the strongest gun control laws and lowest gun-releated deaths. The center declares California has the toughest gun control laws in the nation and gives the state an “A minus” on its report card, a designation shared only with New Jersey and Massachussetts.

The highest per-capita gun death rates were in Alaska, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi — states that the law center said have weak gun control laws.

Get ready for the misinformation campaign to counter this study from the NRA. I’m sure they’ll emphasize “San Francisco” as often as possible.

The NRA will definitely emphasize “San Francisco” then tell a story about a elderly white couple who fended off a home invasion by minorities using a AR-15, then engage in ridiculous historic hypotheticals like “What if the Jewish store owners had guns during Kristalnatch, huh?!?,” and screech “Freedom!” a bunch of times.

“A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” doesn’t mean that any whackjob should have access to an uzi.
These are old words written in the 1700′s by British settlers with no standing army after their breech of contract revolt against Britain. Period!
It’s a big stretch of the imagination to see how these words even remotely apply to today’s America and are somehow an endorsement of the weaponry available on civilian streets.

      Actually, the term “keep and bear arms” is an 18th century term refering to military service;
      http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/1995/sep/21/to-keep-and-bear-arms/
The NRA and gun-nuts in general have simply changed the meaning of the words to suit their agenda.

I’ve been seeing various pro-gun-nuts who will insist that CRIME (not gun deaths, but crime all around) goes down in states with more guns and goes up in countries with stronger control. Thats what they’ll do, ignore the deaths caused by these weapons and focus on deaths across the board and crime as well as if they are all interconnected.

    Sorry for the double post.

Australia also had success with gun control.

I wonder why you never hear from the NRA on the possibility that bad/evil/mentally ill people might move to states with weak gun laws so that they can get their guns easily for that killing spree? Isn’t that at least a possibility we need to address? I guess that’s just the price we pay for freedom.

Be vewy vewy quiet. Weh hunting tywants!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/LeShan-Jones/100000478051440 LeShan Jones

Because it’s easier to claim that ALL criminals steal ALL of the guns they use. Thats what the NRA does, assume that criminals steal everything and that gun control wont prevent them from getting weapons.

  • muselet

If you want a preview of the NRA’s line, just scroll down to this comment, from “Yvan Rejean Pontino”:

This is a report on gun control from an entity based in San Francisco that is touting more gun control. There is absolutely no way that this could possibly be biased in anyway.

The only thing he missed was a gratuitous slap at lawyers. And his was one of the smarter comments.

Wow, liberalism really is the creed of ignorance. There isn’t a credible study in the world that matches the results of these loons in San Fransisco. The Brits and Aussies banned guns and violent crime is up 100%! Home invasions, something so new in Australia that the law hasn’t even figured out how to classify it yet, are rampant.

Guns ARE effectively banned in Chicago, and yet, it’s safer to walk down the streets of Teheran wearing an “Allah Was A Pedophile” t-shirt, than down the streets of Chicago minding your own business! Over 500 gun murders in Chicago in 2012, a city that bans guns! More people died in Chicago than soldiers in Afghanistan!

By contrast, states that follow the rule of law, and don’t try to deny their citizens their Constitutional RIGHT, have low violent crime.

Think about it, in liberal run hell holes, where citizens live in tyranny, rather than Freedom, a bad guys knows if he is in a crowd, of say 20 people, it’s a good bet that all 20 are unarmed, because they obey the tyrannical law the bad guy doesn’t.

On the other hand, come to say, Texas, where Liberty and Freedom are still honored. Put that same bad guy in a crowd of 20. Chances are 50-50 that every single one of those 20 are armed. That makes for a very polite society.

A couple decades back some loon drove a car through a Luby’s restaurant in Killeen, Texas then opened fire. Before he could do much harm, a lady pulled her gun out of her handbag and dropped the killer, saving hundreds of lives. That’s how it’s supposed to work.

NO ONE can stop a crazy from doing what they do. But when they do what they do, an armed person can end what they are doing. A disarmed sheep can only wait to die.

There’s a reason why gun crime is relatively low in Texas. We have tough “castle” laws. You do a home invasion in Texas, and the homeowner will kill you, period. No questions asked. That tends to deter home invasions. The rest boils down to no one knows who is carrying, and that tends to make the bad guys think twice.

The gun ban, as well as an outright ban on defending yourself, even on your own property, has been such a “success” in the UK, that now idiot liberals over there are talking about banning knives, the next weapon of choice, as is race hustler Al Sharpton in this country. It seems an idiot liberal is an idiot liberal regardless of geography. Stupidity and hate seem to be a universal language.

BTW, in CHINA where gun ownership is banned, there have been a rash of loons running into school rooms slashing students with knives. This is happening all over China, and proves that NOTHING can sop crazies from doing what they do. NOTHING except a well armed citizen!

You know what MUST be banned? So called “gun free zones” Every single “successful” mass shooting since 1950, except one, has been in places that advertise themselves as “gun free zones”

The one exception was Jared Lee Loughner, the left wing loon who had stalked Congresswoman Gabriel Giffords [ a blue dog moderate] since 2007. That shooting did not take place in a “gun free zone” It’s the ONLY ONE that didn’t.

The loon who shot up the Colorado movie house? He had to drive many miles out of his way to get there, as all of the theaters close to home WERE NOT advertised as “gun free zones”. The one he did shoot up listed “gun free” on it’s website.

Here’s the deal though, just as the 1st Amendment protects free speech, and makes sure liberal websites, like this, and hate mongering news channels like MSNBC can’t be banned, the Second Amendment does the same for LEGAL gun ownership.

I know reality, and knowledge, are foreign concepts to liberals, but our founding fathers wrote the Second Amendment as a way for the citizens to keep GOVERNMENT in check, not for hunting or self protection, though those are obvious benefits.

I suggest idiot liberals go read the Federalist Papers, those writings used to sell the Constitution to the American people before it was ratified. There was absolutely no ambiguity as to why our God given right to protect ourselves from a tyrannical government is protected by the Constitution.

The Constitution is the Supreme Law of the land, don’t like it? Do the work necessary to change it. Otherwise, shut up.

The first thing the Soviets, the Nazis, Castro in Cuba, Chavez in Venezuela, and other evil people throughout history have done is disarm the people. Obama knows this and wants to follow that model. You cannot truly control a people who can defend themselves.

As Thomas Jefferson wrote: “When the people fear government, there is tyranny, but where the government fears the people, there is Liberty. This is a universal concept that has been time tested.

Great Britain tried to disarm the American colonists before the American Revolution. They were unsuccessful.

Before the Texas Revolution, Santa Anna sent a detachment of twenty soldiers to take back an old cannon from the city of Gonzales. That cannon had been loaned to the city to protect it from Indian raids. Knowing Texians had had enough of the self proclaimed “Napoleon of the West” Santa Anna looked to disarm Texians.

The Mexican troops were met in Gonzales by Texas militia, carrying a white flag with a single black star, a cannon, and the words “Come and Take It” written on it. When the Mexicans tried to take it, they were repelled by cannon and rifle fire. They left without the cannon, a few less Mexicans-they were dead- and the Texas Revolution was born. In short order Texas was a free and independent Republic.

Liberals may think they can defy the rule of law, and trample on the American people’s God given rights, [that are guaranteed by the Constitution, BTW] but they will meet the same fate as all tyrants who have attempted to enslave free people. Americans aren’t sheep as were the Germans, Russians, Cubans, or people of Venezuela. We’ve seen this before, and know exactly what it’s about and what to do.

My ancestors fought two bloody revolutions [America's and Texas'] to defend Liberty and Freedom, and escape the tyranny of liberals the likes of you. Millions of Americans [and Texans] come from that same fine tradition of defending Liberty and Freedom.

In 2010 in Texas, it is reported that:

There is one murder every 7 hours.

      One rape every hour.

One violent crime every 4 minutes.

One aggravated assault every 7 minutes.

      One burglary every 2 minutes.

One property crime every 22 seconds.

      One robbery every 15 minutes.

      Liberty and freedom!!!

When will you be attacking Fort Sumter, Cletus?

See my first comment above. This guy just did exactly that.
Gary, please try and overthrow the government with your mighty guns of justice. Let me know how well you fare when the swat team comes to take you down.

He’s a bona-fide Secessionist. Really, click his profile. Sore loser piss-pants baby can’t accept having lost 150 years ago.

In some ways I see the Confederacy as the last holdout of Feudalism & this is why the modern day bucktoothed drooling inbred Teabagger Neoconfederate America-Hating backwards-assed shitkicker mouthbreather trolls like Gary are so enamored with modern batshit conservatism because played out to it’s logical extremes it’s basically anarcho-warlordism mixed with some type of crappy corporate neo-feudalist dystopia.

Fatbody Gary doesn’t quite get it that old diabetic sedentary white men like him are not going to exactly be high on the food chain if the U.S. becomes Waziristan or Mogadishu. Just a Mad Max Malthusian apocalyptic madhouse sewer in flames. We are younger and fitter than him and his ilk. With no police, no fire, no streets, no FDA, nothing to protect them; I and my ilk will be 50x the survivors of all the fat white middle class right wing dipshit keyboad jockey couch potatoes. I will eat them live. I will eat Grover Norquist and wear his skin like a pelt. I will festoon my war chariot with Teabagger skulls and will reserve a front section just for Gary’s. Which he should consider an honor; finally his dumb life will have served a purpose, that being frightening my enemies.

Fuedalism is where the republican’t party has been trying to take the country for a long time, because then you have super-rich land owners controlling the lives of all those they allow to live on their land.
Gary is one of those confused souls who equate guns with freedom, these are people who view American history through only three wars; the Revolution, the Civil War and WWII but its the myths of those wars they believe in. All the various wars inbetween are a complete mystery to them as well as the reasons for those wars.
He reads NRA publications and really believes their version of the second amendment (the NRA practically never publishes the first half of the second amendment) and probably thinks it gives him the right to overthrow the government. These idiots never think about what it would mean to actually try and fight the Army, they figure that ‘hey, they took up arms in the Revolution and won’ without understanding the actuall history. Until France came in on our side and provided us with men and material as well as a naval boost, we were not fighting a winning strategy, it’s also the reason his ancestors LOST the Civil War. Real history and those pesky facts are not something they deal in.

          • villemar

Yeah all true & great points. Although he probably couldn’t have cared less about WW2 beyond the extent of “Hitler was a soshalist because Nazi had the word Socialist in it, herp derp.” & of couse his Aspergarian fetishization of The Glorious Texas Republic’s beating back the horrible Mexican hoards.

Lol I looked back at this idiot’s rant and sure enough he’s lumped in the Nazis with Castro, Chavez, the Soviets, etc. etc. No cognitive dissonence whatsoever. The word is in the name & that’s all he needs to know about Germany 1933–1945.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/LeShan-Jones/100000478051440 LeShan Jones

Yeah, Jonah Goldberg wrote an easily disprovable BS book on Liberal Fascism and all the low info voters out there believe it whole heartedly…like sheep.

This guy also doesnt understand the Constitution or even history judging by his mindless rant.
He sounds like an NRA flyer exploded what with all the bullshit talking points he rattled of in his ignorant post.
By the way Gary, that Thomas Jefferson quote is not from Thomas Jefferson. It was actually written in 1914 by an obscure radical political thinker named John Basil Barnhill, during a published debate in a socialist magazine called the National Rip- Saw.
      Congradulations, you quoted a Socialist.
