Quote of the Morning

“I can’t imagine that position would ever change.” John Boehner when asked if his position on marriage equality would change if his child was gay

Attitudes like this too often send LGBT children of right-wing parents into hiding — or worse. Boehner ought to be ashamed of himself. For a guy who so easily lapses into tears, it’s remarkable that he’s this cold-hearted.

What’s “remarkable” is that the United States of America’s political system would even allow such a person to be in such close proximity to the pentacle of power. A continued “Thank You”, Bob. When are you doing Maher’s show next?

This is red meat thrown to the party base.

John Boehner may or may not care about marriage equality or LGBT rights or much of anything else, but he does care passionately about keeping his job. If he had said anything else, he would be primaried and he likely would lose.

Bigotry will sustain him and his inebriated self worth in his hours of electoral uncertainty.

      It’s his only friend.

As I’ve said before, John Boehner strikes me as a traditional politician, and in normal times he’d be a middling Speaker of the House. These are not, alas, normal times.

So we have the unedifying spectacle of Boehner trying to look at least as opposed to tax increases and gay marriage and all the rest as the noisiest members of his caucus. Egged on by Eric Cantor, the House Rs are reenacting that cliché from every bad B-Western, the bad guys shooting at some unfortunate’s feet and demanding he dance.

If Boehner weren’t the south end of a northbound horse, I’d almost feel sorry for him.

That’s the booze he’s constantly under that’s making him cry.

This is why I don’t expect many republicans to change their positions even if they had a gay son or daughter. Too many would rather follow the example set by Alan Keyes than by Portman.
