‘Merika: Gun Violence and Abortion

47 people were shot and 7 were killed in Chicago over the weekend, marking the city’s most violent weekend thus far in 2013.

At least 34 people were shot — seven of them fatally — Saturday afternoon through Father’s Day Sunday, stretching from 94th Street and Loomis Avenue on the South Side up to about North Avenue and North Pulaski Road on the Northwest Side, according to authorities. The youngest person killed during one of the bloodiest weekends in Chicago this year, 15-year-old Michael Westley, was fatally shot by a police officer Sunday night.

Shootings from Friday afternoon into Saturday left another 13 people shot, 1 fatally. The combined tally resulted in 47 people shot, and seven killed this weekend. Last year at about the same time, there were 53 people shot, nine fatally in one weekend.

Meanwhile, Katy Hall and Jan Diehm at The Huffington Post have compiled this handy map which depicts states that have a waiting period for having an abortion but not for buying a gun.

To drive the point home, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives is poised to vote on a national 20-week abortion ban, which would be unconstitutional, but they won’t lift a finger to curb gun violence.

Personally I find rabid gun violence and the War on Women to be far more consequential to the freedom and liberty of Americans than the court-ordered surveillance of emails sent from Pakistan. But I’m not a libertarian, so my priorities are unlikely to mirror theirs.

The far right would claim that abortions kill way more than firearms do, and likely claim that firearms save lives despite all the evidence to the contrary.

Abortion and guns are the new religion as in avoid discussing religion and politics. I engaged one of these folks on a blog cast and brought up their rational right wing argument that we should trust individual woman to make the decision not some Government death panel and she exploded. She screamed at me why I wasn’t screaming at her and that I that she hated that I made her feel stupid.
