Here’s just one reason, among many, that I will not shed a tear as the wall of white patriarchy is torn down and demographic changes alter the political and cultural landscape.
According to the University of Michigan, Latina women were disproportionately sterilized under a state-sanctioned program for nearly three quarters of a century. via ThinkProgress
Between 1909 and 1979, Latina women made up between 20 and 30 percent of the total sterilizations for mental health patients in California. It was during those years that California had in place a law that allowed the state to forcibly sterilize “feeble-minded” women, among others, based on the assumption that their offspring would suffer from the same “problems” that they did.
When the likes of Jason Richwine and other like-minded thinkers (which in Richwine’s case would apparently include Andrew Sullivan) make the case for eugenics under the guise of “science,” we should be reminded that these were the consequences of the last time such arguments were popular.
If you believe in karma, I’d say white guys haven’t even begun to pay for centuries of atrocities.
