Google Buys Creepy Robot Maker

The New York Times reports that Google has purchased Boston Dynamics, makers of the infamous “Big Dog” robot and an assortment of other creepy creations.

Google confirmed on Friday that it had completed the acquisition of Boston Dynamics, an engineering company that has designed mobile research robots for the Pentagon. The company, based in Waltham, Mass., has gained an international reputation for machines that walk with an uncanny sense of balance and even — cheetahlike — run faster than the fastest humans.

It is the eighth robotics company that Google has acquired in the last half-year.

In addition to already controlling most of the world, Google now also controls these early Skynet prototypes.

I jest, but I genuinely feel that this is a good thing because what would have been deployed almost exclusively for military purposes may now be brought to commercial or civilian spaces.

Of course that doesn’t make them any less creepy.

In the future, when the skies are dark with Amazon delivery drones, competing companies will lease packs—or should that be herds?—of semi-autonomous Google robots, which will gallop through the streets, delivering packages.

As long as we stay out of their way, and the drones and the robots don’t start fighting over turf, we puny humans should be okay.

I was gonna say that Google bought BD as a counter to Amazon’s drones — turret mounted lasers to take ‘em out — but your idea is (a bit) more optimistic.

I hope someone is programming the Three Laws into these not at all creepy creatures. I also hope that google doesn’t staff customer service with them. The customer is always caught and squashed?
