For Christie and the Star-Ledger, What a Difference a Few Months Make

LedgerBombshell

The New Jersey Star-Ledger is calling from the impeachment or resignation of Governor Chris Christie if the latest allegations from former Port Authority official David Wildstein prove to be true.

Forget about the White House in 2016. The question now is whether Gov. Chris Christie can survive as governor. [...]

Wildstein claims there is documentary proof that the governor has been lying.

If this proves to be true, then the governor must resign or be impeached. Because it will show that everything he said at his famous two-hour press conference was a lie.

Four months ago the Star-Ledger editorial board issued a ringing endorsement of the governor for his reelection. Despite labeling him a fraud, a catastrophe, hostile, and egotistical, among other things, they endorsed him against his challenger Barbara Buono.

They’re right. He should be impeached or resign if what was revealed today is true, but the full scope of their editorial malfeasance is apparent today.

Four months isn’t a very long time to go from endorsing someone to calling for their head.

Normally, I wouldn’t care… it’s easy to be taken in and then find out that someone really really sucks. But these idiots basically went on about how Christie sucked and then endorsed him ANYWAYS, and then are whining about him when he sucked in the way they said he would.

    Piss off, you cowardly assholes.

Today? Clearly it was obvious four months ago.

If I may be forgiven for repeating myself, the Star-Ledger‘s endorsement included this very telling bit:

    “His ego is entertaining …”

For those four words alone, the editorial board at the New Jersey Star-Ledger should resign, en masse and in disgrace. Not a one of them should ever darken a newsroom’s door again.

No, the paper’s endorsement didn’t change the results of the election. Chris Christie would have won regardless. But the paper neatly laid out the case against him and then endorsed him. Even if Christie or one of his minions threatened to kneecap the children of every member of the editorial board, endorsing Big Chicken—again, h/t Charlie Pierce—was still an act of cowardice.

I don’t know. Being a corrupt bully willing to screw peons over in order to make sure corporate investors get their way may be exactly what will endear him to republican primary voters.
